Role Summary:
Seasonal position providing interactive and engaging interpretive education opportunities for youth primarily at Wirth Lake Beach in Theodore Wirth Regional Park. Develop activities for and lead impromptu nature and science inspired activities with beach visitors using a mobile pushcart as a hub and resource center. Share information about nature focused opportunities in Theodore Wirth Regional Park and the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden. Assist with special tours and programs at Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden as needed.
Work season & schedule:
May 18, 2020 – August 30, 2020. May, early June and late August times may be negotiable if other work/school commitments exist. Commitment to finish the full season is required
Shifts:
Part-time hours (25-35 hours per week). Commitment of working a minimum of four shifts per week required. Shifts typically scheduled to include 2 to 3 weekday afternoon/evenings and 1-2 weekend afternoon/evening shifts each week. Beach shifts are scheduled between 11:30am and 7pm. Additional duties include assisting with tours & programs weekdays at Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden between 8:30am and 4pm.
Essential Duties:
• Create and prepare engaging nature and science focused activities for youth
• Lead activities (informally) with youth visiting beach
• Promote nature focused activities at other sites in Theodore Wirth Regional Park
• Maintain pushcart resource center and related educational materials and tools
• Assist with special projects, programs, and events
Required Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of:
• Minnesota and regional native plants and plant communities including aquatic plant communities
• Local Minnesota wildlife including aquatic species
• Environmental education practices and principals
Skills and Ability to:
• Follow written and oral instructions with attention to detail
• Meet Garden project deadlines on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis
• Work successfully both independently and as a team member with staff, interns, and volunteers
• Communicate in a professional and friendly manner with the public
• Facilitate high-quality nature-focused programs and activities
• Utilize computer with Microsoft Office applications
Minimum Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent and in-depth knowledge in one or more of the following subjects: ecology, botany, ornithology, mycology, entomology, zoology, geology and/or environmental education (academic training in one of these fields preferred)
• At least three months interpretive experience working 20 hours per week at a nature center, camp, zoo, arboretum, or similar venue
• Demonstrated ability to work well with children, adults, and diverse populations
• Excellent communication skills including the ability to speak publicly in a clear, professional and engaging manner.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Ability to speak and teach in a language such as: Spanish, Hmong, Somali, Oromo, and Vietnamese
