Role Summary:
Seasonal position providing interpretive education opportunities for youth and adults, and welcoming and assisting visitors in the Martha Crone Visitor Shelter and on the trails at the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary located in Theodore Wirth Park. Lead regular public tours, specialized programs, and provide other educational services to Wildflower Garden visitors.
Work season & schedule:
March 16, 2020 – October 31, 2020. Commitment to finish the full Garden season is required.
Shifts:
Part-time hours (15-29 hours per week). Weekly commitment of working four shifts per week overall, scheduled for 2 weekday evenings and 1-2 weekend shifts each week. Required to be available for 7 and work up to 6 weekend shifts per month. Shifts are scheduled as follows: Monday-Friday from 3:30pm- ½ hour before sunset, Saturdays 10am-3:30pm and 3:30pm- ½ hr before sunset, and Sundays 12pm- ½ hr before sunset. Required attendance at staff meetings and trainings scheduled: 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month (April-October) from 3:30-5:30pm and March 18 and 25 from 1:30-5:30pm.
Special Program hours outside of shifts: Must be available during daytime hours (8am to 4pm) for a minimum of one day per week (same day each week, Monday-Friday, for the entire season) to lead special tours and programs in addition to regular shift work.
Related Work:
• Maintain wood chipped trails
• Tactfully enforce MPRB rules and regulations
• Perform inspections and maintain equipment, machinery
• Provide outstanding customer service for park visitors
• Notify supervisor of concerns
• Perform other related work as assigned
Required Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of:
• Minnesota and regional native plants and plant communities
• Minnesota (with a focus on local) wildlife
• Environmental education practices and principals
Skills and Ability to:
• Follow written and oral instructions with attention to detail
• Meet Garden project deadlines on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis
• Work successfully both independently and as a team member with staff, interns, and volunteers
• Communicate in a professional and friendly manner with the public
• Facilitate high-quality nature-focused programs and interpretive opportunities for visitors and volunteers
• Utilize computer with Microsoft Office applications
Minimum Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent and in-depth knowledge in one or more of the following subjects: ecology, botany, ornithology, mycology, entomology, zoology, geology and/or environmental education (academic training in one of these fields preferred)
• At least three months interpretive experience working 20 hours per week at a nature center, camp, zoo, arboretum, or similar venue
• Demonstrated ability to work well with children, adults, and diverse populations
• Excellent communication skills including the ability to write, listen and speak publicly in a clear, professional and engaging manner
Preferred Qualifications:
• Ability to speak and teach in a language such as: Spanish, Hmong, Somali, Oromo, and Vietnamese
Compensation:
$14.50 per hour
