The IDEAL Center at the Science Museum of Minnesota is looking for a dynamic and personable individual to join our diverse, creative team as a Professional Development Specialist. This position functions as part of the highly collaborative IDEAL teaching team, co-designing and implementing professional development for adults focused on inclusion, diversity, equity, access, leadership (IDEAL) along with organizational change and educational improvement. IDEAL works across many sectors including K-12 education, higher education, government, informal education, non-profits, and for-profits.

The PD Specialist will share their skills by: (1) participating actively in the IDEAL Center’s highly collaborative planning process for professional development programs; (2) team-facilitating engaging and challenging professional development learning experiences focused on organizational change toward access and equity; (3) working closely as part of the IDEAL Center team to provide client support, prepare program materials, consult informally with clients and participants, and contribute to program evaluation and dissemination; and (4) communicating actively with a rich diversity of professionals within the department, across the Museum, and throughout Minnesota and the U.S.

The ideal candidate will have a deep interest in the ways in which culture shapes teaching and learning, extensive experience navigating cultural differences, a strong desire both to learn and to facilitate adult learning concerning the many ways in which oppression affects opportunity, and the fortitude to make systemic change. In addition to education, highly desirable fields include African American Studies, Chicano Studies, Gender Studies, Museum Studies, Sociology, Art for Social Change, and/or related fields. Experience working successfully with culturally diverse populations at many levels is highly preferred.

Work Environment & Schedule: Requires ability to work year-round with a semi-flexible schedule, including extended hours during periods of intense activity. We are currently working remotely due to COVID-19. Post COVID we anticipate both virtual and face-to-face work; face-to-face work will include state and national travel. Temporarily remote work from home to be assessed every 3 months in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, office setting onsite.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

Programs

  • Contribute ideas and suggestions for new program content as part of the highly collaborative IDEAL planning process.
  • Co-design and provide feedback on professional development components that are grounded in relevant research and the IDEAL Center Framework for Equity and Inclusion and that are contextualized in rich trans-disciplinary learning experiences.
  • Actively prepare for team-facilitation of IDEAL programs to ensure the best possible program experience for participants.
  • Utilize adult groupwork facilitation skills appropriate for a variety of professional and community audiences.
  • Facilitate professional development programs with skill, sensitivity to context, and attention to participant response.
  • Work across the department to develop, prepare, and manage lesson plans and supporting teaching resources, develop and maintain registration processes, and create schedules for program planning.

Customer Service

  • Provide informal consulting to IDEAL program participants and provide client support for instructional programming.
  • Provide informal consulting to IDEAL program participants.

Mission Advancement

  • Contribute to the grant writing process to support long-range departmental objectives and funding of IDEAL programs.
  • Support program evaluation, dissemination, and reporting by drafting text, preparing supporting documents, reading, and providing concrete feedback.

Collaboration

  • Develop and maintain relationships with individuals, teams, and institutions that foster partnerships and further the Museum’s impact on professional development and equity and inclusion.
  • Develop and maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships within the Museum to ensure integration, encouragement, and cooperation between departments.
  • Improve knowledge and skills by practicing and responding to coaching and mentoring from IDEAL Center colleagues.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Experience working with a variety of identity/cultural groups on creating equitable and inclusive environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, understand, interpret, and apply ideas from complex academic texts.
  • Ability to write clear and compelling arguments.
  • Skilled in developing and facilitating engaging teaching material for adult audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong commitment to access and equity issues.
  • Cultural competency and experience working with diverse communities.
  • Willingness to be open and respectful of all backgrounds.
  • Fluency in language(s) other than English valued (Hmong, Somali, Spanish).

Hiring Pay Range: $51,000 USD or more annually / Depending on Qualifications.
