Dodge Nature Center and Preschool is a nonprofit organization providing quality environmental education programs on its 460+ acre nature preserve in West St. Paul, Mendota Heights, and Cottage Grove. Dodge has a nature-based preschool (Dodge Nature Preschool) on the Main Property in West St. Paul.
Dodge is seeking a dedicated groundskeeper specializing in restoration to join our team. This role is pivotal in establishing priorities for restoration, vegetation management, and overall building and grounds work. The groundskeeper will manage projects across all four Dodge Nature Center properties, ensuring alignment with long-term land use goals. Daily responsibilities include planning and coordinating projects for seasonal staff, volunteer groups, Sentence to Serve work crews, and contractors.
This is an in-person role based at Dodge Nature Center’s Shepard Farm property in Cottage Grove.
Job Functions and Key Responsibilities
Human Resource Management
- Supervise seasonal staff and oversee volunteers, Dakota County Service workers, and youth job skill training groups.
Buildings and Grounds
- Maintain trails and buildings at at our Shepard Farm property in Cottage Grove.
- Lead snow removal efforts and ensure site cleanliness.
- Manage projects at our Shepard Farm property in Cottage Grove, including tree cutting, mowing, erosion control, and building maintenance.
- Perform daily cleaning tasks to support program use.
Restoration and Maintenance
- Perform land management and restoration tasks, including herbaceous weed control, and management of forest, prairie, and wetland areas.
- Monitor all land restoration projects, adapting strategies as goals evolve.
- Operate and maintain large and small equipment such as tractors, chainsaws, mowers, weed whips, and backpack sprayers.
- Collaborate with the Buildings and Grounds Director to plan projects and support the operational needs of the nature center and its grounds.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Knowledge of native and invasive plants with proficiency in their identification.
- Ability to recognize and understand different ecosystems and landscapes, including effective management techniques.
- Capability to lift and carry 20 to 50 pounds comfortably.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of two years of experience in ecological restoration and land management.
- Proficiency in operating various equipment, including tractors, chainsaws, wood chippers, Bobcats, and zero-turn lawn mowers.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively present to large groups.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team and provide support to other departments as required.
- Experience in supervising volunteers and other labor resources, with a strong ability to multitask efficiently.
