Minnesota Trout Unlimited is looking for a talented and self-motivated individual who will be responsible for conducting components of MNTU’s environmental/outdoor education program, “Connecting Students with Water Stewardship through Hands-on Learning”.
Fishing Skills Instructor (June-August) Responsible for implementing spin and fly fishing skills programs throughout the metro area and possibly outstate Minnesota. The purpose of these programs is to provide youth and their families with engaging, fun, and educational fishing opportunities within their local communities and watersheds. Programs are scheduled during weekdays, evenings, and weekends.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct fun, positive, and experiential spin and fly fishing skills programs.
- Represent MNTU at fishing related community events, leading casting and fly tying.
- Build upon existing partnerships and create new ones with like-minded organizations, working to plan, coordinate, and market fishing skills programs.
- Perform materials/equipment inventory and maintenance.
- Take pictures at programs and events for social media posts.
- Perform additional job-related duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental education, outdoor recreation, natural sciences, or related field. Students with a focus in these areas and applicable experience may apply.
- Experience implementing environmental education and/or outdoor recreation programs with youth and families in a variety of settings.
- Personal and/or instructional level spin fishing experience.
- Excellent interpersonal and public communication skills.
- Willingness to work non-traditional hours and weekends as required.
- Exceptional organizational and planning skills.
- Ability to be flexible, work independently, and multi-task.
- Team player with a positive attitude and sense of humor.
- Fluency in microsoft office and google drive suite of applications.
- Current First Aid and CPR training (or commitment to obtain by start date).
- Possess a reliable mode of transportation able to perform job-related duties.
- Willingness to travel to various locations throughout Twin Cities metro area.
- Ability to pass a background check and valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Personal and/or instructional fly fishing experience.
- Working knowledge of fish habitat, ecology and water related education.
Compensation This is an independent contractor position which pays $15.00 per hour. There is no paid overtime, as it is “exempt” from overtime requirements. Hours per week throughout contract will vary depending on fishing skill program needs. Mileage reimbursement offered at the current federal rate, $0.575 cents/mile.
The contract will authorize a maximum number of 250 hours from June 1st, 2020 through August 30th, 2020. Start and end dates are flexible. Potential for extended contract hours as an environmental educator with MN Trout Unlimited after August 30th.
