Minnesota Trout Unlimited is a grassroots nonprofit conservation organization whose mission is to conserve, protect, restore, and sustain Minnesota’s cold water fisheries and their watersheds. We are looking for a talented and self-motivated individual who will be responsible for leading our summer fishing skills programs as part of MNTU’s education and outreach mission.
Fishing Skills Instructor (June-August) Implement spin and fly fishing skills programs throughout the Twin Cities metro area. The purpose of these programs is to provide youth and their families with engaging, fun, and educational fishing opportunities within their local communities and watersheds. Programs are scheduled during weekdays, evenings, and weekends. All programs have been scheduled in order to have time for MNTU and our partner organizations to promote them.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead fun, positive, and experiential spin and fly fishing skills programs.
- Represent MNTU at fishing related community events.
- Maintain communication with partner organization contacts as needed.
- Communicate and coordinate with volunteers signed up to assist with programs.
- Conduct regular materials/equipment inventory and maintenance throughout summer.
- Take pictures at programs and events for social media posts.
- Perform additional job-related duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental education, outdoor recreation, natural sciences, or related Students with a focus in these areas and applicable experience are welcome and encouraged to apply.
- Experience implementing environmental education and/or outdoor recreation programs with youth and families in a variety of settings.
- Personal and/or instructional level spin fishing
- Excellent interpersonal and public communication
- Willingness to work non-traditional hours and weekends as
- Exceptional organizational and planning
- Ability to be flexible, work independently, and multi-
- Team player with a positive attitude and sense of
- Fluency in microsoft office and google drive suite of
- Current First Aid and CPR training (or commitment to obtain by start date).
- Possess a reliable mode of transportation able to perform job-related duties to include transporting fishing equipment and supplies.
- Willingness to travel to various locations throughout Twin Cities metro
- Ability to pass a background check and valid driver’s
Preferred Qualifications
- Personal and/or instructional fly fishing
- Working knowledge of fish habitat, ecology, AIS, and watershed related
Compensation This is an independent contractor position which pays $16.00 per hour.
Hours per week throughout contract will vary depending on fishing skill program needs. In addition, mileage reimbursement is offered at the current federal rate, $0.56 cents/mile. Your contract will authorize a maximum number of 150 hours from June 1st through August 30th, 2022. Start and end dates are flexible. Potential for extended contract hours as an environmental educator with MN Trout Unlimited after August 30th.
