Join our Exhibits team as an Exhibit Maintenance Manager and help to direct and coordinate the Exhibit Maintenance Technicians and other staff in the repair, refurbishment, and preventive maintenance of finished exhibits and exhibit components in the Science Museum of Minnesota’s public spaces.
Work Environment: Museum public spaces; Exhibit production and maintenance shops.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Manage day-to-day operation of the department to ensure smooth, efficient operation.
- Ensure that the physical environment of the maintenance shop, and all maintenance practices and processes are safe, productive, efficient, and of the highest possible quality.
- Monitor and identify any potential hazards that exhibit components may pose to the security and safety of visitors and staff. Work to immediately correct problems, where appropriate, or to ensure that safety concerns are communicated to and addressed by other staff members.
- Identify and diagnose chronic or systemic defects in individual exhibits that reduce their efficiency and reliability, or compromise their intended function. Wherever possible, implement refurbishments and upgrades that improve reliability while preserving the visitor experience, educational content, and design impact of the exhibit.
- Ensure that documentation of maintenance procedures and changes to exhibit components is clear, organized, and complete so that future maintenance and repair can be executed efficiently.
- Identify exhibits that are no longer viable for museum display, and, with the cooperation and agreement of other stakeholders within the museum, remove those exhibits from the museum floor for long-term storage or disposal.
- Act as the liaison between the Exhibits Maintenance Group and the Exhibits Production Department, the Museum Experiences Division, and the Science Museum.
- Manage, supervise, and coach Exhibits Maintenance staff to achieve high performance while supporting the mission.
- With the supervision and support of the Head of Production, hire, promote, discipline, and terminate Exhibits Maintenance staff as required.
- Schedule Exhibit Maintenance Technicians to ensure that exhibit maintenance support is available every day the museum is open to the public.
- Prepare annual employee evaluations for all Exhibits Maintenance Technicians.
- Build relationships to create internal and external partnerships that will further the mission of the Exhibit Production and Exhibit Maintenance departments and meet museum goals and priorities.
- Work with other members of Exhibit Production to periodically revise and expand the Production Department Manual of Standard Practices and Procedures, to provide as much guidance as possible to Project Leaders and Fabricators in engineering and building exhibits that will meet the highest possible standards of safety, efficiency, and reliability.
- Provide guidance to all Exhibits Production personnel on the interpretation and application of external codes and regulations, museum standards, and the Production Departments Standard Practices and Procedures. Subject to the approval of the Director of Exhibit Production.
- Act as the final arbiter within the Exhibits Production Department on all questions of interpretation and application of all codes, regulations, and standards.
- Communicate promptly with Project Leaders and Fabricators when problems are observed in exhibits in process or exhibit prototypes, either in production or on the museum floor.
- Act as the primary contact in the exhibit shop for graphic design staff with respect to the execution of repairs, refurbishment, and updates of existing exhibit graphics.
- In the absence of the museum’s Lighting Designer, manage and supervise the routine replacement of lamps and lighting instruments in the museum’s exhibit halls.
- Manage the routine and remedial maintenance of tools and equipment in the Exhibit Production Shop. Maintain an inventory system for registering and tracking all shop tools as they are acquired, repaired, and discarded.
- Manage the routine and remedial maintenance of the shop van.
- Prepare and maintain departmental budget. Monitor accountability in adherence to established budgetary guidelines.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience managing staff in a custom fabrication and/or maintenance environment.
- Demonstrated proficiency in a custom fabrication environment that requires a broad range of skills and talents, including some or all of the following: machining; welding and other metal working skills; cabinet making, and other woodworking skills; CAD drafting and fabrication.

- Demonstrated success working in complex organizations where collaboration, communication, and the ability to function independently and as a team member are all essential skills.
- Cultural competency and experience working with diverse communities.
- Willingness to be open and respectful of all backgrounds.
- Fluency in language(s) other than English valued (Hmong, Somali, Spanish).
Hiring Pay Range: $62,500+ annually / Depending on Qualifications.
