Join our Exhibit Production team as an Exhibit Fabricator III. Fabricators work primarily in the museum's exhibit production shop, engaged in all aspects of exhibit creation, from supporting preliminary development and design, to prototyping, fabrication, testing, installation, de-installation, service and repairs. Exhibit Fabricator IIIs are frequently entrusted with broad responsibilities within the exhibit production process, solving problems of function and design, and working with minimal oversight to produce work that meets the museum's very high standards of safety, durability, and craft. They must also work effectively as part of a collaborative team, working with clients, exhibit developers and designers, and other stakeholders to ensure that the content, look, and feel of each exhibit meets all of the requirements and expectations that have been established.
The ideal candidate will have a background and proven interest in science, meticulous attention to detail, and unbridled creativity and curiosity. Applicants must possess the ability to work in a fast paced, collaborative environment on projects that require advanced problem solving and fabrication techniques. The position requires a balance of independent work as well as team work with varied stakeholders.
Incumbents in the position cover a wide range of fabrication skills and possess openness to new ideas, perspectives, and approaches.
Work Environment & Schedule: Primarily, exhibit production shop at the museum, and a second location also in downtown St. Paul. Occasional work in public areas at the museum. Occasional opportunities to travel for exhibit installations, usually within the U.S. Expect regular exposure to loud noises, smells and dust typical of a production setting Current shifts available vary, but may include day, evening, and weekend hours-dependent on project schedules.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Under the direction of the Director of Exhibit Production, Exhibit Project Leaders, and in collaboration with other fabricators, division staff, clients, and other stakeholders, work to move preliminary ideas for exhibits through an iterative process of design, building, and testing that culminates in finished exhibits that are safe, engaging, and durable.
- Research and study science content areas, specific phenomena, exhibit topics, etc. as required, to develop a solid understanding of the scientific and engineering aspects of our exhibits, and the messages they are intended to convey.
- Develop ideas for physical interactive experiences that demonstrate science concepts and phenomena in safe, engaging, and practical ways.
- Fabricate exhibit components, whole exhibits, or groups of exhibits, as assigned, alone or in production team environments, in situations requiring very high levels of fabrication skills, problem solving ability, mature independent judgment, and understanding of the values and goals of the museum and a particular project.
- Fabricate exhibits, drawing on a broad range of demonstrated skills from areas such as:
- CAD experience for production drawings, documentation and direct fabrication
- Electronics including Arduino, circuit board design, discrete electronics.
- Electrical - integrating line voltage and low voltage power and signal wiring into exhibits according to established shop practices
- Automation - pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical
- CNC technology such as laser cutter, 3D printer, CNC router
- Machining using lathes and stationary mills in plastics and metals.
- Other advanced fabrication skills such as welding, mold making or cabinetry.
- Function effectively in a collaborative environment, either as an engaged and committed team member, or as a leader within small formal or informal groups within the Production Department community.
- Work as a member of an Exhibits Production team on exhibit installations as assigned, either at the museum or at other locations.
- Investigate materials and techniques not already in the SMM production repertoire as possible solutions to fabrication and design problems.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- No formal education requirements.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to participate in exhibit installation which may include climbing, crawling, kneeling, etc.
- Ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
- Ability to read electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Ability to work from production drawings.
- Experience in a custom fabrication shop environment.
- Demonstrated history of achievement and excellence in all aspects of fabrication work.
- Demonstrated intermediate or advanced fabrication skills
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to acquire and master new skills as required to accomplish assigned project tasks.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working for a cultural institution is a plus.
- Professional experience producing custom-designed objects and environments.
- Excellent personal safety habits and an overriding concern for the safety of others.
- Demonstrated experience in solving a wide range of fabrication and design problems.
- Cultural competency and experience working with diverse communities.
- Willingness to be open and respectful of all backgrounds.
- Fluency in language(s) other than English valued (Hmong, Somali, Spanish).
Hiring Pay Range: $25.00 USD or more per hour / Depending on Qualifications.
