Environmental Educator (Seasonal) – Children’s Programs
Position Description: The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is seeking Environmental Educators / Naturalists to work with our day camps, nature play groups, public programs, and community events. Program participants range in age from toddlers to adults, with a focus on preschool and elementary aged children. These positions may also work as an occasional Aquatic Invasive Species Educator and Watercraft Inspector. Apply once to be considered for any of the following positions:
*Kroening Interpretive Center Summer Camp Naturalist Instructor - 2 positions available. Instructors will plan, prepare and lead weekly nature-based summer day camp sessions for children ages 6-12. Camps run Monday-Friday 8am-4pm, June 8 – Sept 4. Up to 40 hours per week but usually closer to 35. Required team trainings June 1-5th.
*Kroening Interpretive Center Seasonal Interpretive Naturalist - 1 position available. Prepare and deliver fun, educational, hands-on interpretive programming to visitors of all ages through public programs, pop-up nature station, field trips and at the front desk. Position ranges between 30-40 hours per week June through August (potential to start earlier in the spring and continue into the fall). Hours could be between 8am-9pm, including weekends. Required team trainings June 1-5th.
*Neighborhood Naturalist Program – 4 positions available (see below). Also includes filling in as needed with other programs for all ages, including community events in the evenings/weekends. Up to 40 hours per week. Required team trainings June 1-5th. Summer programs offered June 8 – Sep 4th, preference will be given to those who can commit to the whole season. Valid driver’s license and your own reliable vehicle required.
*Lead Summer Camp Instructor for the Neighborhood Naturalist Program – 1 position available, mostly co-teaching nature-based day camps for elementary aged kids at city parks across Minneapolis, but also filling in as needed with other programs for all ages, including community events in the evenings/weekends. Up to 40 hours per week but usually closer to 25.
*Assistant Summer Camp Instructor for the Neighborhood Naturalist Program – 2 positions available, mostly co-teaching nature-based day camps for elementary aged kids at city parks across Minneapolis, but also filling in as needed with other programs for all ages, including community events in the evenings/weekends. Up to 40 hours per week but usually closer to 25.
*Early Childhood Specialist for the Neighborhood Naturalist Program – 1 position available, leading adult/child Nature Play Groups in June and July and nature-based day camps for preschool-aged children in August. Programs happen at city parks across Minneapolis, mostly in the morning hours. There is an opportunity to fill in as needed with other programs for all ages, including community events in the evenings/weekends. Up to 40 hours per week but usually closer to 20.
Hours: These part-time, seasonal positions average 15 to 40 hrs/week depending on the program area. Hours may fall between 6am-10pm and may include some weekends.
Compensation: $14.50 to $15.00 per hour. Mileage reimbursement provided. This position is eligible for sick and safe leave in accordance with the Minneapolis Sick and Safe Time Ordinance. It is not eligible for other benefits.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience providing environmental/natural resource-based education to members of the public
- Demonstrated ability to work well with children and diverse populations
- Working knowledge of Minnesota flora, fauna and ecosystems
- Post-Secondary training in environmental education, ecology, natural history, teaching or similar
- Must be a self-starter, able to focus on prioritized tasks and work independently
- Strong organizational, communication and public speaking skills
- Excellent customer service skills, positive attitude and good sense of humor
- Must be able to lift 30 lbs., hike uneven terrain, and teach effectively in all weather conditions
- Previous experience with program and curriculum development
