Job Description

Position Description: The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is seeking an Environmental Educator to work in parks throughout Minneapolis. The Neighborhood Naturalist will:

  • Provide fun, hands-on environmental education programs for children both online and in Minneapolis parks*
  • Provide interactive activities and education for all ages at community events*

*Note: Programs will be designed to follow MDH safety guidelines during the pandemic, which may include limited group size, masks, physical distancing, staying outside, or other measures as conditions change

  • Assist with curriculum development for environmental education programs
  • Assist with animal care, scheduling, outreach, and other duties as assigned
  • Occasionally assist with boat inspection and Aquatic Invasive Species education at boat landings

 

Work Hours and Location:  This is a year-round part-time position, 28 hours per week.  The majority of hours occur during the daytime M-F, but staff are required to be available for some evenings and weekends as well. Preferred start date of Monday, September 13th. Each naturalist will be assigned one region of the city to serve, with a shared “homebase” office at 3800 Bryant Ave South.

 

Compensation:  $15.50-16.50 per hour starting wage, plus mileage reimbursement provided.  This position is eligible for sick and safe leave in accordance with the Minneapolis Sick and Safe Time Ordinance.  This position is not eligible for other benefits.

 

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Interpretive or environmental education experience at a nature center, recreation center, or similar
  • Academic training in environmental education, ecology, natural history or teaching
  • Working knowledge of Minnesota flora, fauna and ecosystems
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, communication, and public speaking skills
  • Excellent customer service skills, a positive attitude, creativity, enthusiasm and adaptability
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with children and diverse populations
  • Must be a self-starter and have the ability to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision
  • Must be able to consistently arrive to classes prepared and on-time
  • Must be able to lift 30 lbs, hike uneven terrain, and teach effectively in all weather conditions
  • Must have a driver’s license and a reliable personal vehicle to haul program materials and drive between work assignment locations

 

Desired but Not Required:

  • Previous experience with program and curriculum development.
  • Demonstrated success teaching all ages (especially children) in an outdoor setting or classroom.
  • Ability to communicate fluently in a second language. Spanish, Hmong, or Somali preferred.
