Job Description

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is seeking an interpretive naturalist to work part-time out of Kroening Interpretive Center at North Mississippi Regional Park to do the following:

  • Provide outstanding customer service to park visitors, participants and staff interdepartmentally through communications in person and over the phone
  • Engage visitors of all ages to enhance their experience at the park and promote positive outdoor experiences
  • Provide sanitized materials and introductory instruction for activities that will be self-directed by park patrons
  • Prepare and deliver outdoor activity materials to Minneapolis park locations
  • Maintain established standards of safety and recordkeeping practices
  • Use resources responsibly and maintain clean public, work, and educational spaces
  • Assist with educational animal husbandry and administrative tasks as needed
  • Additional tasks as assigned

Work Season and Hours: This is a seasonal part-time position, up to 35 hours per week during the summer season June 7th through September 4th, 2021. Hours could be between 9:30am-9:30pm, any day of the week. Required team trainings June 7-11th.

Compensation: $14.50 per hour, plus mileage reimbursement. This position is eligible for sick and safe leave in accordance with the Minneapolis Sick and Safe Time Ordinance. This position is not eligible for other benefits.

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Excellent customer service skills, a positive attitude, creativity, enthusiasm and adaptability
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with diverse populations
  • Academic training in environmental education, ecology, natural history, teaching or similar
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, communication, and public speaking skills
  • Must be a self-starter and have the ability to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision
  • Familiarity and confidence working with Microsoft Office software
  • Ability to lift 30 lbs, hike uneven terrain, and work effectively in all weather conditions
  • Must have a driver’s license and a reliable personal vehicle to drive between work assignment locations (mileage reimbursement provided)

Desired but Not Required:

  • Interpretive or environmental education experience at a nature center, recreation center, or similar
  • Previous experience with environmental or outdoor programming development
  • Working knowledge of Minnesota flora, fauna and ecosystems
  • Demonstrated success teaching all ages in an outdoor setting or classroom
  • Previous experience teaching with live education animals and conducting care for these animals
  • Ability to communicate fluently in a second language. Spanish, Hmong, or Somali preferred
