The Aldo Leopold Nature Center is seeking adaptable, creative, and engaging environmental educators to teach spring field trip programs and summer camp programs from mid-April through the end of August. Spring Time Commitment (~April 13, 2020 to June 10, 2020):
This full-time position averages 32 hours/week from mid-April through mid-June. Spring programs run primarily from 8:00am-3:00pm Monday-Friday, with occasional late afternoon, evening, and weekend bookings. Exact hours will be based around the program schedule; occasional evenings and weekends may be required. When no programs are scheduled, staff will work on planning, prep, and other projects.
Summer Time Commitment (~June 11, 2020 to August 28, 2020):
This full-time position averages 40 hours/week from mid-June through the end of August. Summer camp programs run from 9:00am-12:00pm and 1:00pm-4:00pm Monday-Friday, with occasional overnight camping trips (training provided). Exact hours will be based around the program schedule. When not leading camp, staff will teach non-camp programs and work on planning, prep, and other projects.
Extension for employment for fall & winter may be an option with less consistent hours.
Responsibilities:
The primary responsibility of this position is the planning and delivery of inquiry-based, experiential nature programs for school groups, summer camps, and other organized youth groups. Additionally, ALNC’s environmental educators work with the nature center’s other education professionals to plan and conduct programming for preschoolers, homeschool students, scout groups, birthday parties, adult workshops, and public events. Qualifications:
- Degree in environmental education, education, natural science, or related field preferred. However, experience can supplant the degree requirement. ALNC values wisdom and experience and understands that this may not come through a formal degree.
- Experience working with school age (and/or preschool age) children in formal and/or non-formal education settings.
- Respect, concern, and excitement for the natural environment and a demonstrated ability to share that excitement with others.
- Knowledge of regional flora and fauna preferred.
- Spanish language skills preferred.
- Standard First Aid and Adult/Child CPR preferred (ALNC will provide this mandatory training in June if not currently certified).
Position Requirements:
- Ability to commit to available time periods for the duration of the spring/summer as indicated above.
- While the majority of programs occur at the Monona site, candidates must be willing to travel and teach at occasional off-site locations.
- Must be available Monday-Friday, approximately 8am-4:30pm, as well as occasional evenings (spring and summer), weekends (spring) and overnights (weekdays only, summer).
- Computer proficiency (ALNC uses Microsoft Office, projectors, iPads, Google Drive and email).

The successful candidate must be able to manage their schedule and work well in a team environment with other staff. Flexibility, initiative, the ability to problem solve, and a sense of humor a must.
Compensation & Benefits:
Pay is determined at the time of hire and is dependent upon background and experience. Starting pay is $13/hour. Employees receive two paid holidays (May 25 and July 3) and two additional days of paid time off (PTO) during the term of employment.
