Job Posting for:  Environmental Education: Outdoor Science Instructor

Location:              Camp Bovey – Residential Summer Camp in Gordon, WI

Reports to:          Camp Bovey Director

Status:                  Seasonal, Full-time, June 19 – August 15, Typically Saturday and Sunday off, but   schedule varies

Broad Scope and Function of Job:

Implement environmental education and outdoor science curricula (ecology, ecosystems, waste management and reduction, nature art, field journaling, foraging, etc.) for youth ages 7-16. Model and contribute to a positive camp culture that helps fulfill the camp’s mission to “provide fun and encouraging outdoor experiences that ignite curiosity, create connections, and grow confidence.” Manage, maintain, and store equipment related to educational programming. Incorporate B.E.E.T.L.E.S. strategies for promoting inclusive, inquiry-driven, discussion and nature discovery. Manage the physical and emotional safety of campers in programming that includes being in/on/around open water areas and rural woodland habitats up to 3-miles distance from roadways accessible by vehicles. Implement water safety during waterfront activities and swim time.

Purpose and Core Values:

The purpose of Camp Bovey is to provide fun and encouraging outdoor experiences that ignite curiosity, create connections, and grow confidence. Our core values are Caring, Sharing, Curiosity, and Connection.

 Responsibilities:

  • Learn and deliver environmental education program using BEETLES curricula for field instructors to groups of youth ages 7-16.
  • Adapt questions and discussion strategies to meet the age and ability of the campers
  • Collaborate regularly with the Environmental Education Team
  • Use a variety of survey instrument tools to measure camper engagement with the activities
  • Participate as a member of the camp community to plan, direct, and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities
  • Work with the Program Director to align weekly program curriculum effectively, develop special event programs, and participate in leadership programs.
  • Participate in instructional planning and all-staff meetings.
  • Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures – especially around the waterfront area.
  • Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in the outdoor science program area and communal program areas, as well as other duties as assigned.
  • Compost/waste reduction/recycle management.

Qualifications:

Education

  • Two-three years of college coursework related to environmental education, natural/wildlife sciences, biology, conservation, renewable resources, etc. OR equivalent work experience.
  • Current certification in First Aid/CPR/AED or willingness to obtain them (preferred)
  • Current lifeguard certifications or willingness to obtain them (preferred)

Experience

  • Total of two years of verified employment or volunteer work with youth, ages 6 -16, in an educational setting.
  • Three months minimum experience teaching environmental education to youth ages 7+.
  • Documented experience in outdoor skills instruction OR documented training and/or personal experience in camping, hiking, canoeing, etc.
  • Experience as a counselor or educator in a residential camp setting (preferred).
