Location: Camp Bovey – Residential Summer Camp in Gordon, WI
Reports to: Camp Bovey Director
Status: Seasonal, Full-time, June 19 – August 15, Typically Saturday and Sunday off, but schedule varies
Broad Scope and Function of Job:
To further the mission of Camp Bovey through the development of environmental education activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities. Implement outdoor recreation curricula (watercraft, hiking, camping, fishing, target sports, swimming, team building, etc.) for youth ages 7-16. Models and contributes to a camp positive camp culture that helps fulfill the camp’s mission to “provide fun and encouraging outdoor experiences that ignite curiosity, create connections, and grow confidence.” Manages and maintains equipment related to educational programming. Must be comfortable in outdoor settings and with general camping and backpacking skills to a level that allows for focus on student experience. Incorporates B.E.E.T.L.E.S. strategies for promoting inclusive, inquiry-driven, discussion and nature discovery. Manage the physical and emotional safety of campers in programming that includes being in/on/around open water areas and rural woodland habitats up to 3-miles distance from roadways accessible by vehicles. Implement water safety during waterfront programs and swim time.

Responsibilities:
- Implement outdoor recreation curricula to groups of youth ages 7-16 (e.g. Hiking, shelter-building, fire building, low impact camping (LNT principles), outdoor cooking, Rule of 3, outdoor survival facts, strategies, and games, canoeing, fishing, water safety, water relay games, flora/fauna identification, animal signs (tracks, scat, homes)
- Waterfront Management and Safety: Conduct swim tests and swimming level groups weekly and assist with staff training for Waterfront Safety.
- Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in the outdoor skills program and waterfront areas
- Maintain inventory and organization of outdoor living, waterfront, and educational supplies, including gear necessary for hiking, camping, fishing, and canoeing
- Provide session and summer summaries of program material status, needs for repairs, etc.
- Maintain overnight site facilities and safety, such as building and maintaining privies, assessing safety of trails, maintaining fire rings and firewood supplies
- Lead daily safety assessment of waterfront areas and materials; lead camper service project each morning related to waterfront
- Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures
- Work with the program director to align weekly program curriculum effectively, develop special event programs, and participate in leadership programs.
- Train counselors to instruct archery, tomahawk, canoeing, and teams course
- Trip and travel planning/coordination (on site only)
- Coordinate meal planning and emergency management with head cook and nurse for overnight trips or day trips off site
- Organize overnight supplies such as access to drinking water, sufficient food and snacks, toiletry needs, and first aid supplies
- Implement American Camp Association safety guidelines for Specialized Activities, Site and Facilities, and Trip Planning with the support of the Environmental Education Team and Program Director
Qualifications:
- Two years of work experience beyond high school
- Total of two years of verified employment or volunteer work with teaching youth, ages 7+
- Three months minimum experience teaching outdoor recreational activities to youth ages 7+
- Documented experience in outdoor skills instruction or documented training and personal experience in camping, hiking, canoeing, etc.
- Current certification in First Aid/CPR/AED or willingness to obtain them
- Current lifeguard certifications OR willingness to obtain them
- Three years of college coursework related to environmental education, youth studies, park and recreation, wilderness therapy, education, environmental sciences, etc. OR equivalent work experience (preferred)
- Experience as a counselor or educator in a residential camp setting (preferred)
