Job Description:
Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center is a private, non-profit, accredited outdoor school that empowers people to care for the earth and each other. As one of 12 participants in the year-long fellowship, you develop teaching, interpretive, and public relations techniques rooted in residential environmental education. Fellows are exposed to a wide variety of audiences and through instructing our hands-on, experiential, and inquiry-based classes. Professional growth and learning is accomplished through direct teaching experience supported by staff, professional workshops, and a series of observations and evaluations.
Responsibilities:
- Teach 3-hour long outdoor classes in environmental, adventure, and cultural topics to students typically in grades 5th-8th
- Act as a liaison between Eagle Bluff and overnight and day-use visiting groups. This includes giving large group announcements, communicating with school staff and chaperones, and fostering relationships with students.
- Learn and present one-hour naturalist program, typically in the evenings, once/twice a month
- Attend and participate in weekly training seminars and staff meetings
- Plan, lead, and assist with Eagle Bluff's Summer Camp programming
Qualifications:
- Able to commit to August 16th, 2020 - August 6th, 2021
- B.A. or B.S. degree, related field preferred
- Ability to live on-site in a dormitory-like communal setting
- Experience working with children
- High level of self-motivation and enthusiasm; an eagerness and willingness to learn
- Current CPR and Standard First Aid certification
- Comfortable in moving water and able to hike long distances
- Willing to operate and participate in high ropes courses and rock climbing wall
- Related experience as a naturalist, interpreter, camp counselor, trip leader, or other leadership roles is a plus, but not required
Program Highlights:
- Extensive trainings and certifications in the field of environmental education led by knowledgeable, experienced, and friendly staff
- 500+ hours of teaching experience in adventure, environmental, and cultural classes to a wide variety of students, adults, and summer campers
- Access to over 300 acres of prairie, forest, river and pond: including high ropes courses, indoor rock climbing, archery, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, canoeing, and hiking trails
- Opportunity to earn ten graduate level elective credits through Hamline University, Certified Interpretive Guide Certification through National Association for Interpretation, and a certificate in Firearms Safety from the MN DNR
- Living and working in beautiful southeastern Minnesota with 11 other fellows who love the outdoors!
Benefits:
Participants receive an $850/month stipend for living expenses and to apply toward the cost of graduate credit or certifications as seen fit. Participants live in a private staff wing of the dormitory, sharing a bathroom/suite with one other person and having a private bedroom. All 12 participants share a common living room, dining room, kitchen, storage space, and laundry. As additional compensation, meals are provided when visiting groups are in residence as are food staples for use in the staff kitchen. Along with room and board, Fellows are offered paid sick time, paid holidays, limited paid vacation time, personal voicemail, internet access, staff gear, and use of Eagle Bluff's recreational equipment.
