Job Posting for:  Environmental Education: Camp Counselor

Location:              Camp Bovey – Residential Summer Camp in Gordon, WI

Reports to:          Camp Bovey Program Director

Status:                  Seasonal, Full-time, June 19 – August 15, Typically Saturday and Sunday off, but   schedule varies

Broad Scope and Function of Job:

Be an attentive, energetic, optimistic, caring, supportive, and kind adult role model and caregiver for youth ages 7-16 at Camp Bovey in Gordon, WI. Counselors are the primary caregivers for each camper and the heart of camp!  The Counselor is responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills. Using teamwork and inclusive group activities such as discussion, games, and reflection activities, help campers become curious about the world and confident in their abilities. Model and contribute to a positive camp culture that helps fulfill the camp’s mission to “provide fun and encouraging outdoor experiences that ignite curiosity, create connections, and grow confidence.” Actively participate on a team that aims to use environmental and outdoor recreational education as a means to positively impact the way campers learn and the way they think of themselves as learners. Incorporate B.E.E.T.L.E.S. strategies for promoting inclusive, inquiry-driven, discussion and nature discovery. Manage the physical and emotional safety of campers in programming that includes being in/on/around open water areas and rural woodland habitats up to 3-miles distance from roadways accessible by vehicles.  Assist with water safety during waterfront programs and swim time.

Purpose and Core Values:

The purpose of Camp Bovey is to provide fun and encouraging outdoor experiences that ignite curiosity, create connections, and grow confidence. Our core values are Caring, Sharing, Curiosity, and Connection.

 Responsibilities:

  • Be an attentive, energetic, optimistic, caring, supportive, and kid adult role model and caregiver to campers ages 7-16 including: inspire youth to be curious about the natural world (lead by example); empower campers to explore new activities and build new friendships; Set a good example to campers and others in regards to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship; and assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in their living unit, within activities, and throughout the camp in order to meet the intended camper outcomes.
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for all campers
  • Active participation in interdisciplinary learning program areas such as environmental education, swimming, sports, low ropes, teambuilding games, camping, archery, games, canoeing, fishing, and arts and crafts as directed.
  • Data collection and reporting and other job duties as defined

Qualifications:

  • Two years of verified employment/volunteering working and/or teaching youth ages 7+.
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • HS Diploma or GED and one year of work experience beyond high school (preferred)
  • Kind, energetic, enthusiastic, and persistent
  • An interest in passing on a love for nature to children
  • Relationship-oriented personality
  • Patience working with diverse youth in a place that will be unfamiliar and new to many of the campers
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with children and adults (plus a willingness to develop this skill!)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Personal or work-related experience with camping, hiking, canoeing, and other recreational activities
  • Current certification in First Aid/CPR/AED or willingness to obtain them (paid for by Camp Bovey)
  • Prior experience as a counselor or educator in a residential camp setting
  • Current lifeguard certifications or willingness to obtain them (paid for by Camp Bovey)
  • Working knowledge of American Camp Association standards

Compensation and Benefits: Daily Rate of $55 (seasonal rate of $2,420 – or $60/day, $2,640 seasonally for 3+ years works experience with youth or a Bachelor’s degree). Free room provided, but shared with campers and other staff during the week. Food provided when campers are in session. Transportation to and from camp from Minneapolis provided.
