Program/Unit description: Established in 1974 as part of the University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine, The Raptor Center (TRC) is an internationally renowned organization caring for raptors and the world we share with them. TRC provides environmental education and public outreach to approximately 100,000 people annually through its live bird programing utilizing a cohort of 30 education raptors. Position description: This is an 18-month position funded by our two-year STEM education grant. The goal of the grant is to provide more STEM education, exposure, and opportunities to schools with many of the students receiving free/reduced lunches. This grant is split into two parts: the first year will provide outreach programming for schools in the Twin Cities area, and the second year will involve a paid summer internship opportunity for select students to learn directly from STEM professionals.The Engagement and Education Program Specialist will be working under the Education Program Coordinator to provide support in all aspects of facilitating this grant. Those duties for year one (2023) will include working collaboratively with the Education Program Coordinator on developing, facilitating, and adapting off-site interpretive programming that aligns with Minnesota State Science Standards. These programs will include working with live birds on the glove.
In 2024, this position will involve continuing to deliver programming and assisting with the creation and management of a paid summer internship for high school students that focuses on STEM application. This position will involve handling live raptors on the glove and might also include assisting with the care and management of education raptors housed permanently at The Raptor Center, as needed.
The candidate for this position should have experience engaging with diverse audiences, experience in creating educational programming curriculum, a willingness to support youth leadership opportunities, a desire to engage with the community, a high level of comfort around live animals, and a passion for conservation.
Essential functions:
- Advance The Raptor Center’s mission of public outreach by assisting with the design and implementation of offsite educational programming utilizing live birds. (55%)
- Provide professional, engaging, and scientifically accurate interpretive programs on raptor natural history, ecology, conservation, and general environmental science topics
- Work under the direction of the Education Program Coordinator to develop new programming elements and environmental education curriculum in accordance with state standards
- Work under the guidance of the Education Program Coordinator to develop and maintain relationships with teachers and other relevant partners. Communicate with high school teachers to coordinate classroom visits and solicit program evaluation
- Lead, under the direction of the Education Program Coordinator, a paid internship program for select high school students (30%)
- Provide input in the selection of program participants utilizing an application process to be created by staff
- Co-create a summer program curriculum for 15 students to participate in STEM-based activities and lessons
- Work collaboratively with the Education Program Coordinator to identify and coordinate guest lectures and experiences by local STEM professionals
- Assist with program logistics including maintaining program supplies, coordinating transportation, communication between all involved, etc.
- Guide students in creating STEM presentations to be delivered to elementary students and community members
- Coordinate with evaluators to attend programs and implement assessment data in program planning and delivery
- Provide support in direct animal care to birds in the ambassador collection as needed and required by the role. (10%)
- Aid the Interpretation team to ensure the highest level of animal health through preventative and clinical medicine
- Assist in maintaining core raptor behaviors required for programs and management
- Give support, as needed, in daily raptor management
- Other duties as assigned (5%)
Qualifications
- Minimum:
- Experience in effective public outreach programming
- Minimum 2-year experience in program development
- Minimum 2-year experience of public speaking
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to calibrate educational programming using qualitative and quantitative feedback.
- Ability to work independently and effectively with others using interpersonal skills
- Ability to work a Monday-Friday schedule with flexibility to work weekends as needed.
- Willingness to travel with raptors
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule including dates outside of the normal working schedule including evenings and holidays
- Ability to obtain a driver’s license as this position will involve driving a university vehicle to deliver programming to schools in greater Minnesota
- Ability to project a positive attitude towards co‐workers, supervisor, volunteers and the public
- Able to lift 35 pounds safely
- Comfortable around large birds
- Preferred:
- Curriculum writing or STEM education program design experience
- Experience managing youth programs
- Familiarity working with state science standards
- Experience presenting outreach programming utilizing captive wild animals, especially raptors
- A BS/BA degree in Animal Science, Biology, Environmental Education, K‐12 Education or other related area and 1 year experience (or equivalent combination of academic and experience totaling 3 years).
- Fluency in a second language
- Experience with high school students
