INTERNSHIP: Education Support Intern

REPORTS TO: Sr. Climate Change Education Manager

WEEKLY HOURS: up to 25 HOURS PER WEEK, except for the Summer Institute where we expect approximately 8 hours per day for three days with a maximum of 40 hours for the week of the event, and the three Regional Workshops where we expect approximately 8 hours each day for 6 days. Specific dates and locations are provided below.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION
This internship will provide you with experience at a small, mission-driven nonprofit in the field of environmental education and community development. This internship position is critical in the planning and implementation of workshops and training on climate change education and communication. Along with support from your supervisor, special learning activities, and resources, you will gain knowledge and experience in the areas of climate change education, partnership development and event planning. You will have the opportunity to develop your personal climate story and work on your writing skills through blogging and sharing content if desired. We value the interests and skills of the intern and support you to find opportunities for personal growth and development during the internship.
Duties and responsibilities:
The primary purpose of this position is to support Climate Generation’s Education Program with the following activities:
- Assist Education Program with the planning and execution of the in-person TeachScience Regional Educator Workshops (Grand Rapids June 27-28, Mankato August 1-2, and Woodbury Aug 15-16); including event logistics, registration, and coordination of event materials and resources. (candidate must be available for these dates and must be able to provide own travel to and from the events)
- Assist with the planning and execution of the virtual Summer Institute for Climate Change Education, the week of July 17th; registration, event logistics, and coordination of event resources (candidate must be available for these dates)
The Education Intern will also be expected to
- Collaborate with the Education Manager, the Teach Climate Network Coordinator, and the Regional Education Coordinator to develop a workplan.
- Collaborate with the event planning staff to stay on task, meet deadlines, and to accomplish programmatic goals.
REQUIREMENTS
- Must have reliable transportation to travel to in-person events. Travel reimbursements will be provided.
- Must have a reliable computer.
- Must have reliable and stable internet connection.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience in or a willingness to learn about organizing and planning events, and demonstrated ability in carrying out tasks in a timely and efficient manner.
- Demonstrated ability to work scheduled hours and arrive on time.
- Interest in nonprofits, event planning, climate change, climate justice, environmental studies, communication, education, or a related field
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to interact respectfully with diverse groups of people in a variety of settings
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite, email communications, and virtual video conferencing (e.g. Zoom Meetings)
- Experience working in a collaborative team environment
- Interest in learning new technologies and softwares
ADDITIONAL DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working in an office environment, particularly monitoring and responding to email requests from program participants
- Interest in learning about program planning, marketing and outreach, and/or non-profit work
- Comfort with and interested in public speaking and/or meeting facilitation
SKILLS TAUGHT IN THIS ROLE:
The intern’s supervisor will work with them to develop personal learning goals and support them in completion. In addition, the intern will gain the following:
- Writing for program communications and partnership building
- Problem solving, particularly around adapting virtual communication technologies for program needs
- Creating interactive, virtual and in-person programs for teacher professional development
- Program planning, implementation, and evaluation
- Experience in a dynamic, collaborative, non-profit work environment
