Role Summary: The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is seeking an individual to coordinate and lead environmental education activities and programs for visitors to the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary located in Theodore Wirth Regional Park. In 2021, this seasonal position is responsible for program outreach and advertisement; management of social media accounts; coordination of seasonal e-bulletin; development and coordination of programs and activities; program-related data collection, recording and reporting; occasionally leading programs; and other duties as assigned. This individual should be organized, enthusiastic, creative, adaptable, and personable, with a commitment to creating high-quality education programs and interpretive opportunities for visitors.
Please note: Activities and programs will be designed to follow MDH safety guidelines during the pandemic, which may include limited group size, masks, physical distancing, staying outside, or other measures as conditions change.
Work season & schedule:
March 2020–September/October 2020. Part-time hours, typically 24-29 hours a week. Shifts generally scheduled Monday-Friday between the hours of 8am-4pm.
Required attendance at staff meetings and trainings as scheduled: 2nd Thursday of each month from 2:00-3:30pm May-September and April 8 and 13 from 1:30-5:00pm.
Commitment to complete full Garden season is required.
Essential Duties (2021):
- Coordinate development of program brochures, educational handouts, calendars, e-bulletin and other promotional materials
- Create and regularly update social media platform posts and website information
- Develop curriculum and enhance existing curriculum for fun and engaging interpretive programs and activities for the Wildflower Garden and Wirth Lake Beach outreach program
- Keep detailed records of program related information
- Perform key administrative tasks related to programs, patrons, staff and volunteers
- Manage correspondence and communication with tour groups and tour participants
- Coordinate and schedule special tours, classes and public programs (dependent on MDH and MPRB safety guidelines)
- Train and schedule naturalist to lead tours and interpretive programs for youth and adults (dependent on MDH and MPRB safety guidelines)
- Assist with special projects, programs, and events
- Follow and diplomatically enforce MPRB rules and regulations
Required Skills & Abilities
- Excellent communication and organizational skills with ability to follow written and oral instructions with attention to detail
- Knowledge of environmental education practices and principals
- Knowledge of and interest in MN flora and fauna and environmental science topics
- Work respectfully as a team member with MPRB staff, interns, volunteers, and contractors
- Communicate in a professional and friendly manner with the public
- Schedule and coordinate group programs, staff, field trips, special events
- Problem-solve, multi-task and manage projects and time efficiently
- Follow directions, complete assignments, and meet deadlines on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent and college-level coursework in environmental education, education, environmental sciences, or related subjects
- Three or more months of interpretive or program coordination experience working at least 20 hours per week at a nature center, camp, zoo, arboretum or similar venue (other customer service experience will be considered)
- Demonstrated ability to work skillfully and respectfully with children, adults, and diverse populations through previous work and/or volunteer experiences
- Demonstrated ability to successfully manage and develop educational programs and activities
- Competency working with Windows Operating System including proficiency using Outlook, Word and Excel
- Competency working with Facebook and Instagram social media platforms
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental education, education, communications, environmental sciences, or a related field
- Previous experience working as an interpretive naturalist or educator
- Fluency in a second language (including Dakota, Ojibwe, Spanish, Somali, Hmong, ASL)
Compensation: Starting $17.00 per hour. This position is eligible for sick and safe leave in accordance with the Minneapolis Sick and Safe Time Ordinance. This position is not eligible for other benefits.
