Job Description

Position Summary: The Education Director supports Hartley Nature Center’s (HNC) mission to inspire lifelong connections with nature through education, play and exploration by managing HNC’s school, camp, and public programs, including program scheduling, design, curriculum development, staff hiring, training, and supervision, among other duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage, develop and refine HNC’s program content to ensure age appropriateness, quality and effective mission delivery
  • Develop curriculum and ensure program content meets current educational standards
  • Recruit, hire, train schedule, evaluate, and supervise HNC’s Assistant Education Director, environmental education interns and other naturalist teaching staff
  • Serve as a naturalist teacher for school, camp, and public programs
  • Schedule school, camp, and other public programs
  • Maintain and manage educational materials and equipment
  • Attend staff meetings
  • Assist HNC with special events, strategic planning, fundraising events, and other duties as assigned

 

Preferred Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in related field
  • 3-5 years of experience teaching environmental education, including program and curriculum development and supervisory experience

 

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong organization and communication skills
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationship with co-workers, vendors, program participants and community members
  • Ability to work with diverse populations of people of all abilities
  • Ability to regularly work outdoors in nature center setting
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to operate word processing, program registration, and computer systems, and to learn new systems as needed
