EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANT 2 

BELWIN OUTDOOR SCIENCE CENTER

Job Description 

Minimum Qualifications

One of the following: 

  • An AA, AS, AAS (or higher) degree, or 
  • Two years of post-secondary coursework (60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) from an accredited institution of higher education which are applicable toward a bachelor's degree, or 
  • A passing score of 460 (or higher) on the ParaPro Assessment and either a high school diploma or a GED certificate.
  • Experience providing instructional assistance to children or youth

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to teach science inquiry to students with a variety of learning styles and abilities. 
  • Ability to monitor and manage the behavior of small groups of students to be safe and successful in an outdoor and/or online environment.
  • Ability to interact effectively with children and adults representing diverse cultural, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of the major biological environments present in Minnesota and the interdependencies among organism living in each 
  • First aid, CPR and AED certification or willingness to obtain certification within 3 months of being hired.
  • Ability to utilize computer software to perform work duties such as email and Microsoft Word.
  • Familiarity with Learning Management Systems (LMS), such as Schoology and Seesaw, or willingness to engage in professional development to learn and improve skills in LMS.
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) Training, or willingness to obtain training
  • Ability to work effectively, both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • College level coursework in education, biology, child psychology, cognitive development, teaching strategies, natural history, natural sciences.
  • Ability, or willingness to learn digital learning apps and programs to educate students through diverse, multimedia platforms 
  • 2 years experience as a classroom educator or support staff.
  • Knowledge of educational or instructional techniques such as culturally responsive teaching and science process development
  • Wilderness First Responder (WFR) or Wilderness First Aid certification, or a willingness to obtain training
  • Knowledge of bird, insect and plant identification
  • Knowledge or experience on working with students with special needs in an outdoor environment.
  • Experience or willingness to learn outdoor and online activities such as water quality monitoring, citizen science, and field ecology
  • Flexible and innovative approach in adapting to a changing educational field

 

Responsibilities

The essential job functions include, but are not limited to, the following fundamental duties:

  • Assist the Teachers on Special Assignment and the district science lead to implement a curriculum focused on meeting selected Minnesota science standards outdoors, online and in school buildings. Provide feedback on the effectiveness of the delivery of this curriculum. 
  • Support the SPPS District Science Vision of, “All students will think and act like scientists and engineers”
  • Work with small groups of students to implement the science curriculum developed by the Teacher on Special Assignment. 
  • Focus on increasing quality and quantity of student contact time
  • Deliver Virtual Field Trips through Schoology, Seesaw, and/or other online Learning Management Systems as supported by SPPS.
  • Work with other staff members to write standards based, phenomena driven curriculum, plan activities, review lesson plans and obtain information about individual students.
  • Assess the environment daily in order to utilize the changing natural resources and conditions to effectively incorporate phenomena driven science concepts and skills into the lesson.
  • Modify the science topic being demonstrated in accordance with the cognitive and physical needs to students.
  • Enforce rules and policies pertaining to students in a manner that is fair, timely and effective and which ensures student safety.
  • Prepare and clean up for programs 
  • Develop and maintain demonstration tools and teaching supplies
  • Maintain first aid, CPR and AED certification and review safety scenarios.
  • Epi-pen and inhaler training 
  • Attend staff meetings and/or other meetings related to students and the program.
  • Contribute to the District's Strong Schools, Strong Communities efforts by partnering with other staff to contribute to student achievement and the alignment and sustainability of resources.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Responsibilities may include the following

  • Schedule field trips and the buses needed for those trips.
  • Operate a snowmobile to groom winter trails for hiking and skiing.
  • Possible short to long-term reassignment to other SPPS programs
  • Ability to travel to school site to provide outreach programs

 

Desired start date: Aug 30, 2021

 

Compensation: $20.47 - $33.30 per hour (commensurate with experience as per 2019-2021 labor agreement)

 

Workday: 0.875 FTE (7 hours/day), 35-hours per week

Work year: 10-month school year (generally last week of August to last school day in June). Summer programming is available, but not required.
