The International Wolf Center’s mission is to advance the survival of wolf populations around the world by teaching about wolves, their relationship to wildlands, and the human role in their future. The interpretive center in Ely, Minnesota features daily presentations and field trips, an award-winning museum exhibit and a pack of ambassador wolves living in their wooded territory. The Minneapolis office manages fundraising, membership, communications and organizational administration.
Since its inception, the International Wolf Center has engaged people across all 50 states and 38 countries with engaging science based wolf programming. The Center accomplishes educational outreach beyond its Ely facility through a comprehensive Web site at www.wolf.org, a quarterly International Wolf magazine, classroom visits to more than 15,000 students every year, web cams on the resident pack, international symposia and a distance learning program that virtually brings scientists, educators and wolves into classrooms and homes in real time. By teaching people about this mysterious predator, the Center aims to ensure a future wilderness complete with the exciting howl of the wolf.

Position Summary
The Development Director, working with the executive director, board members and staff, is responsible for the preparation, planning and implementation of the development and membership strategy and annual plan to achieve and expand philanthropic support of the International Wolf Center. This position is responsible for all development and membership components of the organization, including donor communication, individual giving, corporate and foundation grants, fundraising events, planned giving, special campaigns and growing the membership base. The Development Director will devote a significant portion of their time (25%) growing and managing a personal portfolio of donors, and will be expected to develop and close major gifts in accordance with established goals. Working with the development team and other International Wolf Center staff, they will be expected to raise approximately $500,000 annually for an organization with a $2 million budget. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated proficiency in managing a team that achieves measurable objectives toward strategic priorities in support of the mission and vision of the International Wolf Center.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Individual, Major Donor and Planned Giving responsibilities (40%):
- Lead development and implementation of fundraising/membership strategy and annual plans to achieve budget goals
- Identify new donor prospects and develop cultivation and solicitation plans
- Advance major donor relationships, drive new/renewed giving, coordinate gift arrangements and documentation, and oversee stewardship of donors
- Solicit participation in the planned giving (Alpha Legacy) program
- Organize impactful special events, field trips and other activities for major donors
- Lead efforts to solicit new, renewed and expired donor gifts through direct mail, electronic solicitations, onsite initiatives in Ely, promotional booth opportunities and special fundraising initiatives such as Give to the Max Day (GiveMN), Howl at the Moon Gala, etc.
- Analyze donor data and giving trends as needed to grow contributions;
● Support Board Development Committee Chair in implementing annual Board campaign
- Develop strategies to grow the Center’s membership and donor base
Foundation and corporate fundraising responsibilities (20%):
- Develop and implement foundation and corporate fundraising strategy and annual plans
- Research, identify and cultivate corporate and foundation prospects including corporate cause-related partnerships and in-kind support
- Prepare funding requests to foundations, corporate, government and other potential funders
- Maintain strong relationships and regular communication with foundation staff
Other fundraising responsibilities (20%):
- Serve as the staff lead for the annual Coordinated Federal Campaign, work with other departments to collect application data and ensure that qualifications are met
- Oversee the development of fundraising and donor communication materials with Communications Director
- Identify and implement fundraising campaigns using social media
- Develop and carry out sponsorship guidelines for the International Wolf Symposium and other special events.
- Develop and carry out a grant writing strategy to support identified educational outreach programs such as Wolves at Our Door
Budget and Administrative Responsibilities (20%):
- Provide supervision for employees in the Membership and Development department (currently 1.5 FTE)
- Prepare and implement an annual budget for the Membership and Development department
- Maintain an annual calendar of fundraising plans, grant application deadlines and project timelines
- Meet or exceed established fundraising revenue goals and maintain expenses within department budget
- Provide monthly development reports to ED and board development committee
- Maintain accurate and timely records/contact reports of all interactions with donors utilizing fund raising database;
- Serve as the lead staff liaison to the board development committee. Assist in the preparation of meeting agendas and coordination of Committee projects and initiatives

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum
- Proven professional with a minimum of three years successful fundraising experience
- A bachelor’s degree is required in a related field of study or equivalent work experience;
- Experience in goal-setting, budget development and management
- Knowledge of local, state, national and governmental funding sources
- Interest, skill and experience in using technology for fundraising
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint
- Strong writing skills for grant-writing and donor communication
- Experience in working with Raiser’s Edge or similar database
Preferred
- Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) Certification
- Previous development experience with an environmental or conservation nonprofit
- Experience closing multiple gifts of $25,000 and more
