Position Summary:
The Development Director is responsible for building organizational health through proactive, multi-year fundraising in collaboration with the Executive Director, Senior Director of Programs, Board of Directors, and staff to deliver on Climate Generation’s mission through sound fundraising practices. This position is responsible for all development components of the organization and its current and growing $1.2 million annual budget. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated proficiency in achieving measurable fundraising results in support of Climate Generation’s solutions-focused climate mission. The ideal candidate is an outgoing, self-motivated and highly-driven individual who is passionate about fundraising and able to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented work environment where strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential to success, and supporters are embraced as important partners in achieving the mission of the organization.
Essential Functions:
Individual and Corporate Philanthropy (50%)
- Serve as a creative co-strategist to the Executive Director in all aspects of Climate Generation fundraising
- Develop, manage, and implement Climate Generation’s fundraising plan in conjunction with the Executive Director, Development and Communications Coordinators, and Board of Directors Development Committee:
- Sustain diverse fundraising strategies and revenue sources
- Meet or exceed fundraising goals set for percentage and/or dollar growth by category (individual, corporate, special events)
- Manage the fundraising plan on a day-to-day basis (prospect, research, cultivation & stewardship)
- Steward, cultivate and manage corporate relationships, including corporate presentations
- Develop and manage donor appeals, special events, and corporate sponsorship opportunities, including executing the organization’s annual fundraising event
- Responsible for a personal portfolio of donors and expected to close major gifts in accordance with development plan goals
- Cultivate and steward participation from Board and Advisory Board in fundraising efforts
- Develop and maintain excellent relationships with individual, foundation and corporate donors in partnership with the Executive Director
Foundations (20%)
- In collaboration with Senior Director of Programs, coordinate annual development, event and communication priorities that correlates fundraising with programming and provides financial support for programs
- Work with Senior Director of Programs to ensure all staff integrate fundraising in their work
- Develop and carry out a fundraising strategy to support identified program needs
- Conduct national foundation prospect research and cultivate relationships with foundation staff for program support
- Assist with proposal review as needed (grant-writing conducted by program staff)
Communications and Marketing (15%)
- Work with and support the Executive Director and the Communications Coordinator to develop and implement strategies around communications, marketing, website and database
- Oversee all Climate Generation communications and marketing material, including supervising the Communications Coordinator and all relevant vendor relationships, as well as printer, graphic designers, webmaster and contract web designers
- Present a strong, positive image of Climate Generation programs to relevant stakeholders
- Participate in public outreach activities such as fundraisers, speaking events, climate change presentations, house parties and program support
- Oversee key communication tools including bi-annual print newsletters, annual appeals, mobile web, text-to-donate, and other outreach opportunities
- Supervise the development of all Climate Generation materials and the production of corporate sponsorship materials, brochures, and acknowledgement letters
- Manage annual fundraising information (donors, financials) for year-end annual report and financial documentation (audit, 990)
Supervision (10%)
- Supervise Communications Coordinator to ensure streamlined development-related communications and ensure organization has sufficient communications support
- Supervise Development Coordinator to ensure efficient and accurate administrative and event support, donation acknowledgement and tracking, database management, and financial oversight
- Manage Board Development Committee and provide monthly development reports
- Oversee donor outreach schedule and donor cultivation software while ensuring accurate donation records
- Provide development statistics for the Board and the Board Development Committee
Organizational (5%)
- Work to create high engagement in fundraising across the organization
- Seek opportunities to grow professionally and encourage professional development of supervised staff
- Support operationalization of diversity, equity, and inclusion as a core organizational value
- Engage in Climate Generation team functions
Expectations:
- Typical hours are 9-5 pm weekdays, with fundraising commitments outside typical hours
- Occasional overnight is required, with potential national travel
- Persons in this position frequently push, pull, carry, lift objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
Experience and qualifications required:
- Bachelor's Degree required
- 5+ years with successful fundraising experience
- Knowledge of local, state and national fundraising landscape
- Current relationships and knowledge of individual, corporate, and foundation giving in Minnesota and beyond
- Interest in the issue of climate change and our mission
- Experience securing gifts of $25,000 or more
- Strong organizational skills with ability to prioritize, multitask, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Interest, skill and experience in using technology platforms for fundraising
- Must relate well to people, work calmly under pressure
- Self-starter with ability to work independently
- Excellent communication skills including the ability to express concepts in writing and through individual conversations
- Commitment to a workplace that values diversity, equity and inclusion, as demonstrated by our organization’s Corporate Fundraising Policy
- Preference for previous development experience with an environmental organization
Compensation and Benefits:
- Salary range for this position is between $60,000-$65,000 based on experience and qualifications
- Full-time, exempt position, working 40 hours per week
- 20 days of PTO (increases with years of employment), 6 paid holidays and a holiday break from December 24th through January 1
- Three percent matching contribution of annual salary to 403(b) retirement plan after one month of employment
