Join our Mission Advancement team as a Database Specialist. This position serves as a power user of the Science Museum’s database and ticketing system (Tessitura). The position mines data to determine market and business trends to increase donor retention, renewal, acquisition and organizational efficiency. The position is responsible for identifying, analyzing, recommending, and implementing new and current projects and initiatives based on a deep and broad understanding of organizational data, departmental business needs, and database functionality to maximize use of technology, meet departmental goals while providing excellent audience based customer service. The position also manages the troubleshooting and resolution of any department-related problems in the database or related systems.
Work Environment: Prolonged sitting and computer use. Temporarily remote work from home to be assessed every 3 months in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, office setting onsite.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
Analytical Skills: A major part of the job is to determine what data trends mean. Being able to analyze the data is crucial.
Problem-Solving: Demonstrated ability to use logic and an understanding of database structure to troubleshoot problems and implement new functionality. Ability to translate analytical findings to potential impacts, outcomes and concepts, and to adapt explanations of these findings to the customer’s level of technical knowledge.
Time Management: Specialist work’s on many projects and various data streams and varying deadlines. Being able to juggle it all is crucial to the job.
Software skills: Ability to use, test, and troubleshoot complex database and end-user reporting tools. Intermediate Microsoft Word and Excel skills including but not limited to working with tables, graphs, creating formulas and reports as well as performing analysis.
Critical Thinking: Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. Ability to utilize technical database knowledge and apply it to organizational concepts strategically. Ability to anticipate the unexpected and deliver results with limited instruction.
- Learns and stays current with the database system to the level of a power user. Gains understanding of department business processes and practices and applies industry best practices using database capabilities.
- Creates lists, targeted mail lists, extractions, and reports within database and related end-user based reporting tools to analyze success levels to support data-driven decision-making. Partners with Marketing for deployment and analytics of email marketing campaigns.
- Conducts scheduled and ongoing quality assurance accuracy testing within database including but not limited to software upgrades, web code implementations, report/list writing, constituent deduplication, national change of address, contributions and memberships to improve data integrity.
- Manages the resolution of department-related problems, tests new projects or initiatives and escalates imminent issues in the database and related tools, including troubleshooting, researching and recommending solutions, and communicating with the internal Information Technology Services department, the database network helpdesk, and other external vendors as needed.
- Research and implement new database initiatives for the department. Analyzes and evaluates outcomes of new and ongoing initiatives, and recommends changes as needed.
- Analyzes data to determine market and business trends, donor segments and fundraising success to increase retention, renewal, acquisition and organizational efficiencies.
- Applies database knowledge and understanding of departmental business needs to research, recommend, and implement new communication strategies with members in an effort to meet departmental and organizational goals.
- Process wealth screen requests, analysis, and import of information into Tessitura from external prospect researching tools.
- Annually create financial coding, source/appeal/campaign/fund structure, annual plan bulk loading, campaign and event activity set up in Tessitura;
- Documentation of processes, and creation of standard operating procedures for both technical and nontechnical users.
- Train staff on Tessitura use best practices, develop user guides, and provide periodic updates on functional changes to ensure data integrity and proper usage.
- Back up for contribution entry and gift fulfillment.
- Provide on-site support for events and programs as needed, which may occur on evenings or weekends.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Proven database experience, including troubleshooting, data analysis, and reporting required.
- Demonstrated ability to apply technical knowledge to departmental business processes required.
- Demonstrated analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills.
- Familiarity with documenting processes and procedures, for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Demonstrated project management skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- Ability to work with staff of varying skill levels and technical proficiencies to effectively communicate complex concepts.
- Demonstrated experience within the museum field, membership programs, use of statistical analysis.
- Demonstrated knowledge or experience with SQL.
- Tessitura or related database experience.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
- Cultural competency and experience working with diverse communities.
- Willingness to be open and respectful of all backgrounds.
- Fluency in language(s) other than English valued (Hmong, Somali, Spanish).
Hiring Pay Range: $51,000 USD or more per year / Depending on Qualifications.
