Job Description

Purpose: The primary role of the Curriculum Coordinator is to assist with the behind the scenes tasks associated with the curriculum of the Outdoor School. This includes but is not limited to the maintenance of education supplies, equipment, and sites, and participating in curriculum review, revision, and creation. Maintenance efforts at Eagle Bluff are shared by a team and require individuals with a high attention to detail and a positive, solution-oriented mind-set. This person must take the initiative to identify problems and make recommendations for improvements.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain program equipment and class sites: Work closely with the other staff to maintain and purchase education equipment, supplies, and sites related to Eagle Bluff’s classes which consist of science, adventure, and history content. Oversee staff training of the equipment and sites, maintain safe atmosphere, perform regular safety maintenance/inspections of teaching sites which may include high ropes courses, and indoor rock wall.
  • Teaching: Teach science, adventure, and cultural history classes to a variety of Eagle Bluff audiences; learn and present an evening Naturalist Programs and work up to one weekend a month; Primary Audience: Middle School; conduct outreach programs as necessary
  • Curriculum development: Participate in collaborative curriculum development, review, and revision for the Outdoor School’s science, adventure, and history classes; align curriculum with MN state academic standards, oversee and assist other staff members with program support projects.
  • General Education Department duties: Attend monthly Education Department meetings; lead adult welcomes for teachers and chaperones; Participate in professional meetings and organizations; regular reporting to the Outdoor School Manager; continually sharpen professional skills by attending trainings, off-site workshops, etc. Assist with additional education department tasks/projects as needed.
  • Professional Naturalist Fellowship Program Support: lead staff seminars and class trainings; participate in class observations and evaluations; oversee program support projects; mentor and coach new staff especially as it pertains to teaching and class modifications

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in education, environmental education, curriculum and instruction, or other related field.
  • 3 years teaching experience. Solid experience with and knowledge about outdoor teaching techniques and pedagogical techniques.
  • Knowledge and skills in outdoor, adventure-based activities such as rock climbing, canoeing, skiing, snowshoeing, camping.
  • Knowledge of SE MN natural history, ecological systems, and general environmental literacy.
  • Experience writing lesson plans and developing curriculum.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certifications
  • Driver’s license
  • High degree of organization, communication, creativity, and self-motivation.
  • Computer and audio-visual equipment literacy.

 

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

  • Residential environmental education experience
  • Experience facilitating and maintaining non-continuous, self-belayed high ropes courses, low ropes courses, and indoor rock climbing wall.
  • Knowledge of B.E.E.T.L.E.S. techniques
  • A./M.S. in environmental education or related field
  • Current Minnesota teaching license
  • Experience with Google’s suite of products and Microsoft Publisher
  • MN DNR Firearms Safety Instructor or willingness to get.
  • First responder or EMT certification
