Job Description

Position Description: The primary role of the Curriculum Coordinator is to assist with the behind the scenes tasks associated with the equipment and curriculum of the Outdoor School. This includes but is not limited to the maintenance of education supplies, equipment, and sites, and participating in curriculum review, revision, and creation. Maintenance efforts at Eagle Bluff are shared by a team and require individuals with a high attention to detail and a positive, solution-oriented mind-set. This person must take the initiative to identify problems and make recommendations for improvements. 

 

Essential Functions:

50% - Maintain Program Curricula: 

  • Work closely with the other staff to maintain and purchase education equipment, supplies, and sites related to Eagle Bluff’s classes which consist of science, adventure, and cultural content. Oversee staff training of the equipment and sites, maintain a safe atmosphere, perform regular safety maintenance/inspections of teaching sites which may include high ropes courses and indoor rock wall. 
  • Participate in collaborative curriculum development, review, and revision for the Outdoor School’s science, adventure, and cultural classes; align curriculum with NGSS and state academic standards, oversee and assist other staff with support projects. 

40% - Education Department Duties:

  • Teach science, adventure, and cultural history classes to a variety of audiences; learn and present one-hour evening Naturalist Programs and work up to one weekend a month; Primary Audience: 4th-8th grade; conduct outreach programs as necessary.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and show sincerity/sensitivity especially in areas of participant experience; show a commitment to individual and organizational growth and improvement; be flexible and maintain a positive attitude and composure when working alone/in teams, receiving constructive criticism, and during times of stress; show dependability in attendance.
  • Attend monthly Education Department meetings; lead adult welcomes for teachers and chaperones; assist with curriculum development and review; continually sharpen skills by attending trainings and participating in professional organizations.

10% - Fellowship Program Support: 

  • Lead staff seminars and class trainings; participate in class observations and evaluations; oversee program support projects; mentor and coach new staff especially as it pertains to teaching and class modifications.

Others duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications & Skills: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 2 years teaching or equivalent experience
  • Experience with and knowledge about outdoor teaching and pedagogical techniques
  • Strong leadership skills: dependable, organized, determined, flexible, high attention to detail
  • Communicates clearly, effectively, and tactfully; active listener and collaborator
  • Experience in outdoor, adventure-based activities such as hiking, climbing, canoeing, skiing
  • General environmental literacy
  • Computer, radio, and audio-visual equipment literacy
  • Current CPR and First-Aid certification or willingness to obtain prior to start date
  • Current driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

  • 3+ years teaching experience; some residential environmental education preferred
  • Knowledge of B.E.E.T.L.E.S. techniques and/or cultural interpretation pedagogy
  • Experience writing lesson plans and developing curriculum
  • Knowledge of SE MN ecological systems and natural history
  • Have prior experience facilitating high/low challenge courses, rock climbing, river canoeing, and/or snowshoeing experiences
  • Experience in risk management planning, execution, and/or assessment
  • Master’s Degree in education/outdoor leadership/related field or current teaching license 
  • MN DNR Firearms Safety Instructor or willingness to get
  • First responder, WFA, WFR, or EMT certification

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
