Join our Science, Education & Equity Division as a Curatorial Fellow for the Department of Anthropology.
This is a new initiative in the Center for Research and Collections with a vision of documenting SMM collections more thoroughly than simple inventory and digitization. This 14-month Curatorial Fellowship is within the Department of Anthropology and will support a Dakota scholar to focus deeply on SMM’s collection of Dakota material culture, investigating object and accession provenance, expanding on the base of knowledge currently held in catalog records, and producing a synthesis and assessment of the collection. To accomplish this, the Curatorial Fellow will examine and document individual objects themselves, consult with Dakota community members, and research collectors, donors, and Dakota artists. The end result will be a report of the collection distributed to community-members, which may be published in the future, a series of narrative descriptions about aspects of the collection of the Curatorial Fellow’s choosing that will be published on the museum’s Learn From Home website, and an overall expanded awareness by community members of the Dakota materials housed at SMM.
This project is in partnership with the Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) at the Prairie Island Indian Community. Members of the THPO will be advising the project, which will include assisting with the application review process.
