Join our Museum Access & Equity team as a Community Engagement Specialist. This role will develop and lead innovative community engagement projects, specifically with individuals and groups underrepresented or disconnected from museum experiences. The Specialists work internally and externally to build and strengthen relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders to help to create a more equitable future for the museum.
This position will be funded for the first two years by a grant from the MN Arts & Cultural Heritage Legacy fund. This is a long-term role not solely defined by this funding. In this role you will collaborate with our STEM Education and Center for Research and Collections departments to live out our broad goal of delivering science and education centered in equity. Core work will include creating more inclusive access to our cultural collections by creatively engaging with schools, family groups and community organizations across Minnesota.
Work Environment: Temporarily remote work from home to be assessed every 3 months in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, office setting onsite. Occasional evening and weekend work, including limited state and national travel and extended hours during periods of intense activity.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Develop and document new programming models that increase museum engagement with a diversity of communities, especially those who have traditionally been underrepresented in STEM.
- Coordinate community partner relationships to strengthen community engagement programming outcomes. Support a network of community members who provide feedback/input to collaborate and co-create programming that meets the needs of their communities and the mission, vision and values of the museum.
- Develop and lead diversity, equity, access, and inclusion activities and initiatives within the organization in alignment with STEM Equity & Education strategic priorities and broader museum-wide vision, strategy, and values.
- Provide work direction and guidance for volunteers, interns, and other staff members who support Museum Access & Equity department projects.
- Collaborate with department directors, museum colleagues, and community members to research and pursue program funding and revenue generating opportunities (e.g. partnerships, grants, and contracts) that support departmental goals.
- Support program evaluation, dissemination, and reporting by drafting text, preparing supporting documents, reading, and providing concrete feedback.
- Represent the museum in community councils/meetings that support and strengthen access programming outcomes. Connect with or refer potential partners to appropriate museum staff members when needed.
- Attend department and division meetings to collaboratively advance the vision and direction of the department.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma / GED or equivalent experience.
- Experience working with a variety of identity/cultural groups, specifically people from backgrounds underrepresented in science, technology, engineering & mathematics education, and careers, on creating equitable and inclusive environments.
- Experience advancing racial, gender & economic equity.
- Understanding of and a personal commitment to social justice.
- Experience providing work direction for staff, interns or volunteers in programmatic or customer service roles, preferably in an informal education setting.
- Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously, maintaining consistent communication with those involved in the projects.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Cultural competency and experience working with diverse communities.
- Willingness to be open and respectful of all backgrounds.
- Certification in facilitation methods valued but not required.
- Fluency in language(s) other than English valued (Hmong, Somali, Spanish).
