The Youth and Family Programs Coordinator will coordinate, facilitate, and assist with developing STEAM-based (astronomy, chemistry, biology, geology, and more) programming for youth and family audiences in the form of summer and seasonal camps, Girl Scout and Boy Scout programs, family days, early childhood classes, story times, birthday parties, and more.
This role is part of the Public Engagement and Science Learning (PESL) team and will regularly collaborate with other departments including operations, visitor services, marketing and finance. The person in this position will ensure all programs are innovative, engaging, accessible, effective, and support the Museum’s mission. They will be a strong advocate for science education and inspire a passion for learning by drawing from University research and resources. This person will have the ability to keep programs running smoothly, managing timelines, schedules, and information across multiple platforms, to navigate conflict, communicate with intention, and adapt to challenges. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Summer and Seasonal Camp Supervision and Coordination (60%)
● Recruit, hire, train and supervise hourly seasonal staff of 12-18 individuals, including materials coordinator, camp leaders and assistants. Carry out daily supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Bell Museum and University of Minnesota policies, and applicable labor laws.
● Create and update existing weekly curriculum for summer and seasonal camps with hands-on, experiential, and project-based activities that are accessible to diverse audiences and reflect best practices for campers entering PreK to 8th grade.
● Create and maintain a master schedule for camp classes, including but not limited to: special guests, astronomy and planetarium activities, learning landscape experiences, and field trips.
● Manage and adapt staffing schedules, including breaks and lunches to remain in compliance of ratio policies and staffing needs.
● Complete midseason performance evaluation of seasonal staff and end of season summative evaluation. Work with camp staff to resolve any performance issues.
● Ensure professional and safe operation of the overall program as well as the safety of the
campers.
● Serve as the point person for conflict resolution and resolving behavioral issues with campers.
● Build and maintain a good rapport with program participants and families, including
coordinating with marketing regarding communications, addressing concerns in a timely
fashion, and post program evaluation.
● Oversee purchasing of camp materials and supplies, track expenses and work with the Education Programs Manager on budget development and management.
● Learn the Audience View system and work with UM Tickets to coordinate event and camp
registration, and scholarship management.
● Facilitate camp programming as-needed.
● Support DEAI efforts in program development, offerings, and audience outreach.
Other Youth and Family Programming (30%)
● Assist PESL team with developing and delivering year-round educational programming such as early childhood classes, family days, scouting programs, storytime, camps, birthday parties, as well as off-site events like camp fairs and science festivals.
● Create and/or update lesson plans and activities for new and existing youth and family classes, events, and programs.
● Work with student supervisors to coordinate and train student staff for on-site programs.
● Assist the PESL and state-wide engagement teams in the development of activities for
STEM kits, and public science events, festivals, and large-scale programs.
● Support the implementation of program evaluations for Youth and Family Programs; implement strategies to improve programs based on data and feedback.
● Facilitate youth and family programming as-needed.
● Deliver experiential learning labs (virtual and in-person), to PreK-12th grade student on an as-needed basis.
Internal and External Relations (10%)
● Represent the Museum at education and science-related conferences and events.

● Ability to work effectively with teammates as well as external contacts.
● Able and willing to occasionally work non-traditional work hours as needed for events to include occasional weekends.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
● A working knowledge of the developments and trends in the fields of education, informal
science learning, and experience with program research and evaluation.
● Understanding of trends in the use of technology-based learning.
