The Youth and Family Programs Coordinator develops, implements and coordinates STEM-focused programs serving youth and inter-generational family audiences, with a primary focus on supervising summer and seasonal camps. Additional programs in this position’s portfolio could include, but are not limited to: scout programs, family-oriented drop-in activities, storytimes, after school programs, and early childhood education. The person in this position will ensure all programs are innovative, engaging, and support the Museum’s mission and values. They will be a strong advocate for science education and inspire a passion for learning by drawing from University research and resources.
The individual in this position should have a growth-minded perspective as the Bell has intentions to increase and expand its revenue-generating camp programs, beyond the Bell facility. This person will have demonstrated experience and ability coordinating complex programs, including the management of multiple, concurrent timelines and schedules, collaboration with other museum and university departments, familiarity with data management systems, and supervision of a seasonal staff of approximately 15-20 people.

The Youth and Family Programs Coordinator reports to the Education Programs Manager, and is part of the larger Public Engagement and Science Learning team. As a whole, the team is responsible for public- facing interpretive efforts including exhibitions, hands-on learning in the Touch and See Lab and beyond, arts experiences, public science events, planetarium shows and astronomy programming, school programs, and youth camps. This position works closely with teams across the Bell, including Visitor Services, Marketing and Communications, Operations, and Statewide Engagement to create effective learning experiences and an inclusive environment that meets the needs of diverse, particularly youth and family audiences.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Youth Camp Development and Implementation (35%)
- Oversee, implement, and grow the Bell Museum’s STEAM, inquiry-based youth camps.
- Collaborate with University researchers to design and implement camp curriculum modules that engage youth in hands-on science relevant to research and in fulfillment of education and outreach goals.
- Develop and maintain annual camp schedules and curricula that includes, but is not limited to special guests, astronomy and planetarium experiences, outdoor experiences on campus, field trips, and hands-on, project-based activities informed by best practices in informal science learning.
- Implement camp program evaluations; gather and analyze data on program content, engagement and effectiveness to inform program improvement.
- Work with Education Programs Manager to develop camp program annual budget (expenses and revenue) and set annual revenue goals.
Youth Camp Program Operations, Logistics and Supervision (35%)
- Create, foster and maintain a welcoming and inclusive environment for program participants and staff.
- Ensure professional and safe operation of camp programs, in accordance with Bell Museum and University of Minnesota policies; review and revise program policies, procedures and practices.
- Serve as main point-of-contact for program participants and families; build and maintain rapport with campers and families, address concerns in a timely way, and lead efforts to resolve conflict or behavioral issues.
- Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate camp staff including camp material and behavioral coordinators, camp leaders and assistants; develop and manage staff weekly schedules.
- Manage purchase and management of camp materials and supplies, tracking expenses to stay within budget.
Other Youth and Family Program Development and Implementation (25%)
- Develop and implement content, programs, and activities that serve youth and intergenerational family audiences, including but not limited to value-added visitor experiences, scout programs, and family classes.
- Support the PESL and Statewide Engagement Teams in the development of activities for large-scale, cross-team collaborative endeavors like Family STEM Nights and summer STEM kits as well as museum-based education programs.
- Facilitate PESL education and public science programs as-needed.
Internal and External Relations (5%)
- Attend staff, education team, PESL team, and Pre-College Network meetings as well as project-based meetings.
- Represent the Bell Museum at education and science-related conferences and events
- Attend conferences, workshops, and seminars as part of professional development opportunities, including on a variety of diversity, equity, and inclusion topics.
- Provide content support for grant and philanthropic proposals and marketing materials.
Required Qualifications
- B.A./B.S. in education, science, or other related program of study and three years experience or a Master’s degree in education or related field
- Knowledge of best practices in informal science learning
- Experience supervising staff, ideally including college students
- Skill in project management, including the ability to manage multiple projects on different timelines and scales to deliver project outcomes and meet deadlines
- Ability to communicate with a variety of audiences using different approaches, given context, audience, or goal Cultural competence, a commitment to practical and programmatic inclusion, and experience working in/with diverse communities
- Demonstrated proficiency in using Google Suite tools and MS Office products (to include Word, Excel, etc.)
- Ability to lead and coach excellent customer service within the team
Desired Qualifications
- Experience developing and implementing informal STEM education programs for grades PreK-12
- Proficiency in using camp or reservation management software
- Working knowledge of program evaluation
- Fluency in a language other than English
- Experience working with youth with special needs
- Experience developing and managing budgets, including establishing and meeting revenue goals
Payrange: $40,000- $60,000
