Job Description

The Assistant Educator position involves assisting camp leaders in creating a safe, age-appropriate, and positive learning environment during educational camp experiences centered on environmental science, natural history, and agriculture for children entering grades 2-6 in the 2022-2023 school year. This camp is a collaborative effort between the Bell Museum and the North Central Research and Outreach Center (NCROC) and is located in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, with some required training to take place in St Paul, Minnesota.

About NCROC: The North Central Research and Outreach Center (NCROC) is dedicated to the discovery and sharing of knowledge to improve the quality of life for Minnesotans. The unique soil, climate, and social and economic environment in north central Minnesota provide opportunities for researchers to conduct research and lead outreach programs that contribute to sustainable economic systems in the region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Camp Activities (85%)

● Assist summer camp leaders in creating a safe, fun and enriching camp environment.
● Assist with setup and tear down of camp activities.
● Lead camp activities as needed.
● Camp staff are required to follow all safety related guidelines, policies, and procedures at all times and ensure that campers are safe at all times. This includes following prevailing University of Minnesota COVID-19 safety policies.
● Lead and assist in facilitating activities outdoors.
● Regular check-ins with the Camp Leaders and Statewide School & Community
Engagement Coordinator.
● Travel to the Bell Museum for in-person training in June (paid travel and training hours, plus mileage, accommodations, and per diem covered by Bell Museum)
Other duties as assigned (15%)

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications
● Minimum High School Diploma or G.E.D required
● Enthusiasm for working with youth.
● Experience or relevant coursework in youth education, physical or natural science, or agriculture.
● Experience working with youth and adults in a team environment.
● Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds.
● Must be dedicated, dependable, flexible and enthusiastic.
● Must be 18 years of age or older.

Desired Qualifications
● Experience with environmental education and/or interpretation, science, education, or youth.
● Experience working in a camp or after-school program setting
● Customer service experience.
● First Aid and CPR Certification.

Hours, Pay, Location, Other

● Position start date: June 3, 2022

● Position end date: July 29, 2022

        ● Hours:

  • 30 - 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, during two weeks of camp beginning July 18th and ending July 29th.
  • Nine training days between the dates June 1st and July 18th.

● Required staff training days:

○ 5-6 days of training:

  • 5 days in St Paul at the Bell Museum between June 3 - 10 (dates to be finalized)
  • 4 days in Grand Rapids at NCROC between July 11 - 15

● Pay rate: $15.00/hour

● Location: North Central Research and Outreach Center (NCROC) Grand Rapids, Mn
