Summary of Position
The Bell Museum seeks an enthusiastic, flexible, creative, and collaborative practitioner of informal learning with strong foundations in natural history and science to join the Gallery Programs team as Gallery Programs Coordinator. The position will develop and implement gallery activities and manage a student interpretive staff to enhance visitors’ experience of the museum in support of the Bell’s mission and to realize its vision, to energize a community that embraces the transformative nature of science. Candidates should have familiarity with best practices in informal science learning, and competence in working in ways that respect different ways of knowing (including an interest in cultural relevance, arts, Indigenous perspectives). Candidates should also have experience with relevant content, which might include naturalist training, coursework in the natural sciences, or a working knowledge of climate change and sustainability, among other topics.
The Gallery Programs Coordinator reports to the Associate Director of Public Engagement and Science Learning (PESL), and is part of the Exhibits and Gallery Programs team within the larger PESL team. As a whole, the team is responsible for public-facing interpretive efforts including exhibitions, hands-on learning in the Touch and See Lab and beyond, arts experiences, public science events, planetarium shows and astronomy programming, school programs, and youth camps. This position works closely with teams across the Bell, including Visitor Services, Marketing and Communications, and Operations, to create effective learning experiences and an inclusive environment that meets the needs of diverse audiences.
The Gallery Programs Coordinator develops and implements public engagement and science learning opportunities that explore the intersection of science, nature, and art. The position develops and implements gallery carts in conjunction with new exhibitions, activities on our outdoor Learning Landscape, and programs and activities that address high visitation and seasonal periods, as well as current issues in natural history and science.
In collaboration with the Planetarium Programs Coordinator, the position also hires, trains, schedules, and supervises the Bell’s student interpretive guides, the museum’s primary interpretive staff.
As a member of the larger PESL team, this position works to create an accessible and welcoming environment for all visitors, in part by cultivating relationships and partnerships with local community and cultural organizations. The position works with colleagues on the PESL team to develop and lead workshops and training sessions on best practices for public engagement and inclusive science communication for researchers and students who work with the Bell. The position also supports museum-wide initiatives including summer STEM kits and Family STEM Nights, through work with the PESL and Statewide Engagement teams.
Job Duties:
Gallery Program Development and Implementation (50%)
● Develop (and revise or update) hands-on and interactive content to support visitors’ gallery experiences, including gallery carts, activities for the outdoor Learning Landscape activities, and “value-added” seasonal and topical experiences
● Support content development for new displays, including temporary exhibitions and seasonal maker space
● Work with content experts within the University to develop programs and activities and facilitate researchers’ outreach/engagement goals
● Build relationships with external partners to support content development and serve community and audience interests
● Foreground diversity by developing accessible, equitable, inclusive, and culturally-relevant gallery programs to serve both visitors and partners
● Evaluate and adapt programs based on feedback from observation, visitor and volunteer comments, and formal evaluations
Gallery Program Operations (40%)
● Supervise and manage (including hiring, training, scheduling, regularly meeting with, and evaluating) student interpretive guides, in collaboration with the Planetarium Programs Coordinator
● Support and train volunteers in delivery of gallery programs (gallery carts), in collaboration with the Volunteer Coordinator
● Provide content support for PR and social media projects led by Marketing team
● Contribute to grant development as assigned
Program Support (10%)
● Contribute to the creation and delivery of workshops and training sessions on best practices for public engagement and inclusive science communication to support Bell partners (including researchers and students) in successful outreach
● Contribute to content development and implementation of museum-wide initiatives, such as Family STEM Nights and Science + Nature kits
● Collaborate with PESL team members to support public science events and on-site education programs (e.g. K-12 field trips, youth camps) by participating in logistics planning and coordinating/training student guides
Required Qualifications
- BA/BS in education, science, and/or related program of study and 3 or more years of work experience developing and implementing STEM education programs (informal or formal)
- Knowledge of best practices in informal science learning and inclusive science communication
- Experience supervising staffs, ideally that include college students and/or volunteers
- Skill in project management, including the ability to manage multiple projects on different timelines to deliver project outcomes and meet deadlines
- Enthusiasm for complex and collaborative development processes, working both independently and within and across teams, stakeholders, and partners
- Aptitude in creative collaboration, navigating conflict, communicating with intention, and adapting to change
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, and an interest in developing and testing clear messages for a range of audiences
- Cultural competence, a commitment to practical and programmatic inclusion, and experience working in/with diverse communities
- Available for occasional evening and weekend work, as assigned (may include 3-4 evenings or weekend days per month)
- Demonstrated proficiency in using Google Suite tools and MS Office products (to include Word, Excel, etc.)
Desired Qualifications
- 3 years of experience in developing and implementing informal or formal STEM education programs
- Experience teaching natural history, ecology, or environmental science, especially in an informal learning environment
