Job Description

SUMMARY:

Lead and coordinate the technical and operational support of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board’s (MPRB) Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Program consistent with the organization's comprehensive plan and the mission and goals of the MPRB.  Implement the watercraft inspection and education program to provide park visitors with lake launch access seven days a week for seven months a year.  Coordinate aquatic plant harvesting program and AIS early detection monitoring program. Obtain and manage AIS-focused permits, grants, agreements, and contracts.  Analyze data, write reports, and present information to various internal and external partners or groups.  This work is accomplished to ensure the needs and interests of diverse communities are met while exhibiting cultural proficiency in meeting the needs and interest of underserved and under-represented communities. Start date for this position will be on or after January 3, 2023.

 

What You'll Do

  • Responsible to coordinate MPRB’s overall AIS program, and maintain AIS data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Coordinate the early detection monitoring and rapid response planning of aquatic invasive species for all MPRB water resources.
  • Hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate part-time, seasonal AIS inspections and education staff.
  • Assign and schedule work to ensure MPRB boat launches are appropriately staffed to meet needs of park visitors.
  • Lead and coordinate an interdepartmental AIS work group.
  • Coordinate AIS related work actions with supervisors and manager from various MPRB work groups and departments (i.e. aquatic plant harvesting, phragmites control and eradication, aquatic plant surveys, Nokomis weir)
  • Communicate AIS Program information needs to the organization – including MPRB staff, Superintendent and executive team, and the Board of Commissioners.
  • Assist MPRB in identifying and addressing the park and recreation needs of underserved and under-represented communities.

 

What To Bring

Need to Have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, Aquatic Biology, Water Resources, Environmental Education, Natural Resources, or closely related field.
  • Experience working with Aquatic Invasive Species inspection and education programs:  at least one (1) year.
  • Experience coordinating and scheduling part-time staff, ideally including multiple locations: at least two (2) years
  • Supervisory experience of employees to include part-time and seasonal staff:  at least two years
  • Valid Driver’s license
  • Certified Level 1 AIS Inspector (MN DNR) within six (6) months of employment.
  • An equivalent combination of related experience and education and training may be considered.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with natural resources field work and mapping:  at least one (1) year
  • Fluency in a second language

Most work performed in a normal office environment and some work performed out in the field at boat launches, docks, along shorelines, on waterbodies, in addition to parks and other locations within the City of Minneapolis.  Will be required to work occasional alternate schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Skills Crucial to Success in This Role:

  • Knowledge of Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS): plants, insects, disease, and wildlife.
  • Knowledge of industry best practices in AIS management and control methods.
  • Knowledge of environmental education program development including planning, implementing, and evaluating programs.
  • Knowledge of best practices of industry survey techniques.
  • Create positive relationships and work in a collaborative and diverse environment, particularly with community groups, multiple agencies, and levels of government
  • Solve problems and effectively handle critical, controversial and/or sensitive policy issues, maintain confidentiality in work-related matters.
  • Negotiate and meet deadlines and prioritize issues, identifying which issues require immediate attention and taking effective and appropriate action based on that determination.
  • Outstanding customer service principles and practices and standards for a diverse customer base.
