Job Summary
The incumbent conducts and reviews modeling assessments of air toxics that estimate human health risk from facility air emissions and assists with the update of guidance documents for these analyses. This position assists with incorporating scientific computing and automation into human health risk data processing and analysis in order to advance the state-of-the-knowledge and practice at the agency. The incumbent collaborates with other Environmental Analysis and Outcomes Division staff to improve the manner of assessing cumulative impacts and the development of procedures to incorporate risk based decision making into agency programs. The incumbent also works in cooperation with other MPCA divisions and state agencies on health risk issues and assists in communicating risk related science.
Minimum Qualifications:
Requires a Master's degree in environmental health (Epidemiology, Public Health), Atmospheric Science, toxicology, or physical science.
OR
A Bachelor’s degree in an environmental health (Epidemiology, Public Health), Atmospheric Science, toxicology, or physical science and two years of experience working in a related field with demonstrated abilities to analyze and understand environmental data, fate and transport of environmental contaminants, risk assessment principals, toxicology, and to develop conclusions and recommendations.
Candidates must also possess good communication skills; the ability to analyze, organize and present information in a clear and concise format to a wide range of audiences; and interpersonal skills sufficient to work collaboratively with others.
Preferred Qualifications:
Understanding of toxicology, routes of exposure, and principals of risk assessment of effects and risk of environmental contaminants.
Knowledge about the fate, transport, interaction and effects of environmental contaminants.
Experience using SQL and related databases.
Experience with statistical or scripting languages such as R or Python.
Ability to:
Recognize and understand the potential impacts of air pollutants on environmental and human health.
Apply current research to the assessment of facility impacts on human health and the environment.
Critically review, correlate and synthesize information and data into comprehensive recommendations, reports, and presentations.
Sort through differing opinions and understand and explain the rational for policy recommendations.
Physical Requirements
Requires occasionally lifting and/or carrying such articles as file folders, ledgers, and small equipment. Although a sedentary job is defined as one which involves sitting, a certain amount of walking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties.

When driving is not a minimum qualification or essential function of the position:
Position duties may require travel but driving is not a minimum qualification or essential function of this position. Employees who may drive for state business will need their driver’s license checked prior to operating a state vehicle.
