Job Description

4-H Youth Development in Hennepin and Ramsey Counties is looking for an experienced youth program leader to oversee a variety of camp programs all summer long! This person will:

  • Oversee the planning and preparation for 4-H summer camps & programs including, but not limited to:
    • June 27 - July 1 2022: 4-H Campus Immersion on the University of Minnesota 
    • July 11-15 & July 18-22: 4-H Urban Explorers Day Camp with Minneapolis Parks and Recreation 
    • August 1-5 2022: 4-H Overnight Camp at Voyageur Environmental Center
  • Execute safe and quality educational experiences
  • Commit to summer fundraising initiatives 
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to camp counselor team(s), including facilitating intensive counselor training sessions

Pay:

The rate of pay is dependent on experience and education, ranging from $15.00 - $18.00 / hour 

Time required:  

  • There are approximately 400 hours available for this position between April and August
    • April - May : approximately 4 hours/week 
    • June - August: approximately 20-40 hours per week, pending program schedule
  • Preparation before camp includes but is not limited to: meetings with 4-H staff, DEI workshops, camp counselor training, and activity planning
  • All programs are in-person, preparation and planning meetings may be virtual; remote work options are available when not in on-site, in-person programs
  • On-site at Voyageur for the entire camp length, Monday-Friday, August 1-5, 2022, including overnights

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate, plan, and oversee 4-H summer camp programs; serve as positive role model
  • Plan and work with counselors to organize a variety of recreation programs for campers; supervise camp counselors in all activity areas
  • Develop and assist in program plan, camp check-in, and emergency preparedness
  • Enforce camp rules and regulations; model standards for conduct as they pertain to camp staff and campers and enforce rules
  • Support and embrace diversity and inclusion in all interactions with campers, other staff members, volunteers and parents; Implement programs that engage diverse backgrounds, interests and learning styles
  • Assist with program evaluation, as necessary
  • Other duties may be assigned as required

Qualifications: 

  • Must be at least 21 years old by June 15 to comply with UMN Safety of Minors policies regarding residential (overnight) supervision
  • Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Completion of a post secondary degree is preferred.
  • Experience: Experience working with diverse youth and/or youth development experience is required. Experience with program management and leadership is required. At least 2 years experience working with and on behalf of youth in a summer camp setting. Completion of CPR and/or first aid training is required by June 15. 
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: The ability to organize and motivate youth while nurturing positive youth development, decision making, responsibility, and leadership is required. An interest in/skill in working with young people and adults is required. Good problem-solving skills, conflict resolution skills, and a solid understanding of risk management is required, as well as cultural competency and a commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
  • Transportation: Must have a valid driver’s license & access to reliable transportation. Programs and camps take place across the Minneapolis / St Paul area.
